3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Road and Transport Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
The job is a full-time position for Doctoral Candidate (DC) in the field of road and transport engineering. You will be a key resource to the project “Sustainable Maintenance of paved Areas for year-round Accessibility for All users (ACCESS4ALL)”. 4. 09 Fully Funded PhD Position in HYDROGENi team
Summary of PhD Program:
HYDROGENi is a Centre for environment-friendly energy research (FME) dedicated to the research and innovations within hydrogen and ammonia needed to meet the 2030 and 2050 goals of the Norwegian hydrogen road map. HYDROGENi’s activities are a collaborative effort from Norwegian and European partners (industry, universities, and research institutes) that cover the entire hydrogen value chain.
Hydrogen’s role in the energy transition was previously thought to be a “clean” alternative to fossil fuels in cars. However, it can also replace fossil fuels in industrial processes, such as coal in the steel industry, and in the maritime sector. Hydrogen is now considered to be one of the main drivers of the green shift. To realise hydrogen’s full potential, there are important knowledge- and technology gaps that need to be filled.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in human geography
Summary of PhD Program:
‘The nature crisis‘ is claimed to be one of the most important challenges of our time, and commonly refers to an alarming loss of biodiversity due human activities. The UN Nature Panel and the Climate Panel, among several others, are hence calling for critical efforts to be made to halt the loss of nature. The conceptualization and communication of a ‘nature crisis’, cannot be isolated to communicating natural science only, for example the decline in species numbers or the extent of land use changes. There is an equally important need to understand how and why ‘the crisis’ is mobilized through the language of loss of nature and species more broadly.
Application Deadline: 22nd May 2023
8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physical Activity Epidemiology (The LABDA project)
Summary of PhD Program:
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. You will be hosted at the Department of Public Health and Nursing, in the Musculoskeletal Research Group. NTNU offers an inspiring and professional environment in which developing one`s talents and skills is encouraged. We offer ample opportunity for development, deepening and broadening, additional training, and a place to grow! This is a PhD scholarship within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network ‘The association between 24/7 movement behaviour and risk of common non-communicable diseases’ funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (grant agreement No.101072993). The PhD project is expected to start in October 2023 and employment will be for 36 months.

9. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in biodiversity topics
There is an equally important need to understand how and why ‘the crisis’ is mobilised through the language of loss of nature and species more broadly. This project will trace the notion of a ‘nature crisis’, both temporally and spatially, in order to (i) investigate how and to what extent ‘the nature crisis’ has managed to establish itself as another discursive tool in the environmental area, and (ii) understand what the notion is set to refer to scrutinise within which contexts the notion is mobilised, by whom, in what ways and for what ends.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Gas Flotation for Subsea Produced Water Treatment
Summary of PhD Program:
The Ugelstad Laboratory at the Department of Chemical Engineering has a vacant PhD position within Gas Flotation for Subsea Produced Water Treatment. Gas flotation is a common process for treatment of produced water. It relies on dispersion or nucleation of gas bubbles and attachment of oil droplets or solids to the bubbles to enhance their rising velocity. The goal in this project is to study how a range of fluid properties influence the removal efficiency of oil and solids during high temperature high pressure gas flotation. Addition of flocculants to improve the water treatment efficiency, and determination of the working mechanisms of the flocculants will also be important aspects. A HPHT gas flotation rig will be further developed and used to study water treatment efficiencies, while microfluidic methodologies will be used to provide better mechanistic understanding of the process.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in modelling of bridges for accurate estimation of remaining service life
Summary of PhD Program:
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. Railway networks in the developed world consists of a large number of bridges that have reached or surpassed their design life, in Norway for instance, the majority of the 900 steel bridges in the network were constructed and put into service more than 75 years ago. It is not possible to replace all these bridges in the foreseeable future, due to the enormous cost associated with interruption to operation and construction of new bridges. It is also not desirable from an environmental perspective to replace a bridge that is safe and fully functional in the first place or can be made so by correct maintenance and repair.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Predictive Digital Twin for Offshore Wind Energy
Summary of PhD Program:
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. The Norwegian government is presenting a major initiative in 2023 to promote offshore wind power. The plan is to install 1,500 offshore turbines that will produce a total of 30GW energy by 2040. Even though considered as a promising sustainable energy source, wind power is highly intermittent and non-dispatchable because it is a variable power source. Digital twin is an enabling technology to accurately forecast energy production from a wind farm by providing a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the behaviour of the wind farm and its components under different weather conditions and operational scenarios. The aim of the research is to leverage digital twin technology for offshore wind farms to enable accurate wind energy forecast through modelling, simulation, and optimization of wind farms’ behavior under uncertain weather conditions and operational scenarios.

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nuclear Propulsion
Summary of PhD Program:
Nuclear propulsion has been used by navies for more than 50 years, but merchant shipping has not caught on ultimately due to costs. The NuProShip I project is one of the first projects in the world trying to rejuvenate the idea of nuclear propulsion for merchant shipping based on entirely new reactor technologies. These new reactor technologies are so called Generation IV technologies unlike nuclear propulsion today and in the past which are Generation II and III. The project is to complete a concept and feasibility study leading to a follow-up project where the technologies will be developed. However, not all issues are covered in sufficient details.

20. Fully Funded PhD Position in Simulation and analysis of drop-turbulence interactions
Summary of PhD Program:
We have a vacancy for a PhD position at Department of Chemical Engineering. The position is part of the FRIPRO project “Establishing next-generation pioneering models for interface mass transfer, breakup and coalescence in turbulent flow”, funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The understanding of droplet dynamics in turbulent flow is important for a variety of industrial processes. In this project we are interested in the detailed analyses of drop-turbulence interactions.
We are particularly interested in understanding the drop-turbulence interactions in the cases where such interactions result in breakup of droplets. Numerical simulations of turbulent flow (resolved scales) with dispersed droplets (described by the phase field method) can provide the necessary flow fields needed to analyse the drop-turbulence interactions. Canonical flows such as the channel will be adopted for the multiphase flow simulations.
