2. Fully Funded PhD Position in atmospheric chemistry
Summary of PhD Program:
The research project aims at better understanding the aging processes of atmospheric aerosol particles. During photochemical aging, the viscosity of aerosol particles may increase from a liquid to a glassy or solid-state, thereby significantly altering their environmental impact. However, it is unknown whether photochemical aging favors viscosity increase, nor whether there are synergetic effects between photolytic aging and aging through the uptake of gas-phase oxidants such as ozone. The project’s focus will be comparing the two aging processes, photolysis and ozonolysis individually and in combination on single droplets levitated in an electrodynamic balance (EDB) using proxy reactions systems for organic aerosol particles.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in 3D Biohybrid Neuromuscular Tissues
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD focuses on developing a 3D tissue engineering platform for integrating neurons with skeletal muscle cells in a 3D construct. In biohybrid robotics, we lack long-term compatible biological control methods of muscle actuation, as we rely on global electric fields to induce muscle contraction. Your work would address this unmet need and pave the way for the next generation of controllable and smart biohybrid robots. Crucially, your work would also serve as a platform to study the biology of neuromuscular pathologies and treatment methods as an in vitro model with a functional readout alongside more traditional biochemical characterization methods.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in design and manufacturing of soft aerial robots
Summary of PhD Program:
The quest for accessing confined spaces more efficiently, safely and cost-effectively is exponentially increasing. In search and rescue missions, for instance, crevices or gaps in walls often provide the sole viable path to enter collapsed buildings and locate trapped individuals. With the increasing deterioration of infrastructure, novel inspection methods are imperative, even for the smallest interstices. Furthermore, gathering data within dense vegetation canopies has become a priority as we strive to enhance our understanding and prediction of climate change impacts and biodiversity decline.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Robot-assisted eDNA collection
Summary of PhD Program:
The historic Kunming-Montreal Agreement of 18 December 2022 marked a significant milestone as over 200 countries came together to commit to the cessation and reversal of biodiversity loss. However, achieving a nature-positive future remains a formidable task, hindered in part by the absence of efficient and accurate tools for capturing comprehensive snapshots of global biodiversity. This is precisely where the integration of robots and environmental DNA (eDNA) technologies can truly make a difference. The assessment of biodiversity through eDNA entails the collection and sequencing of genetic traces shed by local species within their environment.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microalgae
Summary of PhD Program:
Microalgae are unicellular microorganisms that are getting increasing attention as one of the more sustainable novel foods globally. Microalgae can reach higher areal productivity than terrestrial plants, do not require arable land or fresh water, and can use fertilizers with almost 100% efficiency. Microalgae can provide a significant number of essential nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids and amino acids, to support human health. In the last decades, microalgae have been the focus of extensive research as a novel source of proteins and lipids, while vitamins and minerals (micronutrients) received less attention.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physical properties in black soldier fly larvae processing
Summary of PhD Program:
Black soldier fly processing is an emerging technology for the recycling of organic waste. Waste treatment performance, composition and quality of feed and fertilizer products, as well as temperatures and emissions from the bioconversion processes, are highly feedstock dependent. Previous studies have primarily emphasized the role of biowaste nutrients, overlooking the influence of physical properties such as texture, consistency, viscosity, bulk density, porosity, particle size, and colour. Altering physical biowaste properties may influence bioconversion by altering biowaste ingestion and egestion, larval aggregation and thermoregulation as well as gut residence times.

22. Fully Funded PhD Position in device engineering for efficient microhistology
Summary of PhD Program:
Microtissues, including organoids and spheroids, are transforming biological research, drug discovery, and personalized medicine. Histological analysis of microtissues currently allows us to decipher disease mechanisms and identify potential therapeutic molecules for cancer patients. However, the histology of these models remains highly inefficient, wasteful, time intensive, and costly as it is difficult to position heterogeneous and complex microtissues for efficient processing. This project aims to address this limitation by the use of acoustofluidics for positioning microtissues within a gel embedding medium. We will develop a device to carry out the positioning of the microtissues as well as an associated labware needed to streamline the process and integrate it within existing histology workflows.

23. Fully Funded PhD Position in developing new concepts for automatically detecting de-energized overhead lines
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated people interested in pursuing PhD research on new concepts for automatically detecting if overhead lines for electric locomotives or trucks are energized. In railway grids with a high level of electrification for reducing CO2 emission, there are always also areas without electrification, e.g. for shunting/loading. For operating locomotives in both areas, the pantograph connecting the locomotive to the overhead line must be operated properly at transition points between energized and de-energized areas to avoid costly damage to the pantograph/overhead line and the related outages of locomotives.
