3. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Erythropoiesis in humans normally occurs in the bone marrow within the pelvis and femur. It has become increasingly clear that erythropoiesis and bone metabolism are both responsive to iron status1-3, and that the three processes must therefore be tightly coordinated, especially in states of stress or ineffective erythropoiesis. Recent studies show that a bone marrow secreted protein, ERFE4, suppresses the main negative regulator of iron absorption, hepcidin5, thus enabling an increase in iron availability during stress erythropoiesis. Recent studies also show that ERFE acts by sequestering bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs)6 to inhibit the main signaling pathway in hepcidin regulation.
