This project is part of the international “Mac4Me” Doctoral Network, which aims to improve our limited understanding of how to treat metastatic cancer. Adopting an innovative, multidisciplinary and cross-sectional approach, Mac4Me aims to understand tumour cell-immune host interactions at the metastatic site, including immune and matrix changes induced by tumour cells. Summary of PhD Program:
The cancer of the bile ducts affects around 3000 people in the UK each year and its incidence and mortality are increasing. We are seeking a Ph.D. student to join our multidisciplinary team developing a radical solution for better detection and treatment that uses ultra-thin snake-like robots and advanced optical imaging techniques. We aim to combine Raman spectroscopy, a powerful label-free analytical technique that measures the molecular composition of tissue by using light to excite molecular vibrations, with imaging techniques in optical fibres, hair-thin pieces of glass, for 3D mapping of cancer tissue.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Identifying repurposed treatments for rare lung diseases
Summary of PhD Program:
This studentship, based at the University of Nottingham is aligned to the LifeArc. Translational Centre for Rare Respiratory Diseases. The Centre funded at £9.5M over five years is a national collaborative grouping that will change the research landscape for people affected by rare lung diseases. The studentship will focus upon modelling and drug discovery in one of the Centre’s exemplar diseases, lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). LAM is a rare disease which almost exclusively affects women and is caused by somatic or germline mutations in the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) genes.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Functional Devices and Structures through 3D Multi-material Printing Scale-Up
Summary of PhD Program:
Inkjet printing allows multiple materials to be 3D-printed simultaneously, useful for printing functional devices. Discovering the interactions of these materials and how to leverage this advanced manufacturing process will open new opportunities: devices with variable mechanical and chemical properties; fully 3D-printed electronics; and devices with mechanical or electrical responses encoded into their structure.
