1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Learning and Molecular Dynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

Interested in machine learning (ML) for molecular modelling? This PhD project aims to develop machine learning inter-atomic potentials (MLIPs) for molecular materials and organic-inorganic interfaces relevant to energy storage technology and medicinal applications. The efficiency and accuracy of MLIPs have been thoroughly studied on fixed train/test datasets but the performance of these models in actual molecular dynamics (MD) remains poorly understood. Condensed phase molecular systems are particularly challenging to model owing to a large difference in scale between intra- and inter-molecular interactions.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Health Economics

Summary of PhD Program:

Are you interested in utilising health economics to determine how resources should be allocated across dental services? This project will investigate different methods of priority setting and resource allocation in different dental systems across Europe. Oral diseases are the 3rd most expensive diseases to treat in the EU and there are major challenges in the financing of care. The Horizon Europe PRUDENT (Prioritization, incentives, and Resource use for sUstainable DENTistry) project aims to develop a framework for optimised financing of oral care. PRUDENT will co-develop system performance indicators, conduct real-world and lab experiments to identify improved financing mechanisms and undertake resource planning and deliberative priority setting.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geoscience

Summary of PhD Program:

Perchlorates and nitrates have been measured on the surface of Mars, as well as arid deserts on Earth. Perchlorates lower the freezing point of water and expand the areas where life could survive today, or in the past. When heated, they react with organic molecules, potentially providing an explanation for some results of life detecting experiments carried out by the Viking lander missions in the 1970s. Figuring out when on Mars nitrogen in the atmosphere was ‘fixed’ into other forms such as nitrate is also important, as nitrogen is (after carbon) the second most important nutrient for life.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geoscience

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project we will consider the coupled effect of microbial activity and geochemistry with regards to biofilm formation and mineral reactions in the reservoir and at the reservoir-caprock interface. We will investigate the key microbial metabolisms active during dynamic H2 storage and the boundary conditions driving or limiting their respective activity; the impacts of community dynamics and competitive interactions in mixed microbial communities; which species or metabolisms are likely to have the greatest impact on H2 consumption and the generation of geochemically reactive metabolic products. We will identify the impact of key geochemical and microbial reactions and interactions relevant for an integrated predictive approach, incorporating reactive transport and reservoir modelling so that reservoir integrity and performance can be assessed.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

In this exciting project, you will deploy our brand-new reductant, namely electride (Chem 2023, 9, 576), to potentially solve all these problems. You will pioneer the electride’s applications in organic synthesis, including developing modern, sustainable reduction methodologies, and uncovering unexplored reactivity, e.g., novel retrosynthetic disconnections and late-stage functionalization of pharmaceutical agents and natural products. By eliminating hazardous reductants and solvents, you will contribute to sustainable chemical synthesis.

Application Deadline: 20th August 2023

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, you will develop expertise in: (1) Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry; (2) Advanced spectroscopies, especially NMR, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), X-Ray diffraction/absorption and magnetometry. You will contribute to reshaping chemical synthesis into a sustainable future, by phasing out the hazardous reductants and, more excitingly, solvents altogether. You will work in a multidisciplinary group, based at Newcastle University led by Dr Erli Lu and frequently travel to University of Manchester studying EPR and magnetometry with Dr Floriana Tuna.

Application Deadline: 20th August 2023

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The research will involve extensive field tests at external sites (e.g. the DNV site at RAF Spadeadam in Cumbria) and the project will support and build on recent ad hoc interaction between Dstl and the Faraday Institution on the topic of failure mechanisms for electric vehicle batteries when subjected to stimuli of relevance to defence and security. It will be the first study with the Faraday Institution funded by defence and the first defence funded PhD in this specific field.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biosciences

Summary of PhD Program:

Your focus will be to investigate the neurobiology of decision-making across 3 spatiotemporal scales: the micro-scale (single units); the meso-scale (LFPs; EEG); and the macro-scale (fMRI). Jointly with collaborators, you will use computational approaches to understand causal (directed) interactions between brain regions central to decision making across these scales. To understand the underlying neuropharmacology, you will perturb the system using drugs that are effective in treating aspects of the above mentioned disorders, namely: methylphenidate, atomoxetine and ketamine. You will study their impact on neural metrics of decision-making.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD candidate will design molecular cascades capable of identifying target viruses and viral vectors. You will experimentally test designs for sensitivity and specificity. You will be trained in mathematical modelling of biological systems and in the use of statistical Design of Experiments. By coupling these skills with pipetting robotics available in our laboratory, you will rapidly test, understand and optimise molecular performance. Further, you will take advantage of our expertise in embedding cell-free molecular biology reactions in physical chassis to develop multifunctional materials.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electric Vehicle

Summary of PhD Program:

The concerns over global warming, climate change, energy crisis, has called for electrification of the transport sector. However, there are still some unsolved challenges associated with EVs that are worth investigating. One of them is availability of smart and sustainable charging infrastructure for the EVs. Cities or urban areas will be the early adopters of EVs and so establishing Accessible, Smart and Sustainable Charging Infrastructure (ASSI) in the cities is important. Despite availability of considerable number of research works in this paradigm it is observed that none of them has solved the problem of developing charging infrastructure that is accessible, sustainable, as well as smart in nature.
