Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Dr. Erin George is a surgeon-scientist and Assistant Member in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology with a secondary appointment in Drug Discovery at Moffitt Cancer Center. Dr. George has completed a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering, a Medical Degree, and an Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at Columbia University followed by a Gynecologic Oncology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) most recently in 2018, with nearly a decade of experience with preclinical models in ovarian cancer, in particular, the orthotopic patient derived xenograft (PDX) models. Dr. George is a PI on a targeted tissue collection protocol in ovarian cancer (MCC 22609) and building a repertoire of orthotopic PDX models as well as microtumor explants in a novel culture system. The George lab is currently working closely with collaborators in Drug Discovery (high throughput drug screen, chemical proteomics) and BioEngineering (novel ex vivo culture system, advanced live imaging, single cell sampling) with the goal of bringing novel targeted treatment approaches to patients via phase I/II clinical trials.

Dr. Xiaoqing Yu’s Lab within the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, and Dr. Roger Li from Genitourinary Oncology at the H. 3. Postdoctoral Position 

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

As the organism ages, cells lose their ability to function or begin to function abnormally throuout the body; byproducts and waste molecules build up in circulation and within tissues, connective tissue changes and becomes stiffer conditioning blood flow and oxygen intake, damage to building blocks of a cell (e.g. DNA, proteins, lipids) accumulate. Thus, as a whole an old organism is a different molecular entity than a young one, and tumors developing in aged hosts evolving in different ways than tumors developing in young ones its corollary. Recent work by Dr. Gomes has provided proof for this concept by demonstrating that treatment of established cancer cells with old human serum is sufficient to promote aggressive properties and propensity to metastasize (Gomes et al., Nature 2020). This puts the aging process at the center stage of tumorigenesis coordinating the different aspects required for the evolution of malignant phenotypes.

7. Postdoctoral Position 

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Research in the DeNicola lab is centered around how metabolic deregulation occurs during tumorigenesis and how mutations that promote the activation of the transcription factor NRF2 control this process. Recent work from our lab has focused on how NRF2 influences tumor initiation and progression (PMID: 37062029), how NRF2 influences the cellular responses to cysteine availability (PMID: 31107239 and 33357455), and how tissues and compartments meet their demand for cysteine (PMID: 36862034, bioRxiv 2022.10.06.511221). We have several exciting projects focused on understanding how tissues and tumors use and acquire cysteine and rewire their metabolism in response to oncogene activation, stress, and metabolic perturbation. We are recruiting a postdoctoral fellow eager to explore these topics with sophisticated animal models, in vivo tracing and mass spec metabolomics technologies, and leverage these resources and technologies to develop their own independent research program.

11. Postdoctoral Position 

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Padron Lab studies the molecular pathogenesis of Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML) with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic vulnerabilities. CMML is a rare and lethal hematopoietic malignancy characterized by a characteristic classical monocytosis and a propensity to transform to Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Interestingly, the majority of CMML patients present in a clinically asymptomatic state for periods of weeks to months before progressing to a lethal disease that clinically manifests via a heterogenous group of symptoms. There are no FDA approved therapies that have been demonstrated to alter the natural history of disease and the goal of our laboratory is to provide the preclinical evidence to increase the armamentarium available to clinicians treating this disease. Although our focus is centrally on CMML, our work aims to address questions in the field that can be more broadly applicable to other types of leukemias and cancers.

The Mann lab investigates the genetic and epigenetic regulation of novel tumor suppressors involved in the initiation and progression of pancreatic cancer (PDAC) that we discovered using an in vivo forward genetic screen. We are focused on the regulation of alternative splicing regulated by RBFOX2 during PDAC progression and how to leverage this splicing regulation to predict and prevent recurrent disease and/or metastatic progression.
