This position is focused on the bacterial symbiont Spiroplasma poulsonii and characterization of the toxin used by the bacterium to kill male offspring in Drosophila melanogaster. Spiroplasma secretes an androcidin (known as Spaid) that causes this dramatic phenotype. Remarkably, Spaid distinguishes between male and female hosts during infection, killing 99-100% of male offspring while leaving females unharmed.
