Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
One line of research in the lab focuses on understanding the response to bisphosphonates (BPs), commonly prescribed drugs used to treat osteoporosis a condition that becomes of increasing importance as the world population ages. While BPs are generally safe, some patients do not respond well to these drugs and these drugs are associated with osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical femoral fractures, but the cause of this variation in drug response isn’t known. To shed light on this, we have previously used genome-wide CRISPR screens to identify over 300 genes that affect the response to BPs. We discovered that two genes with large effects, ATRAID and SLC37A3, are essential for the lysosomal release of BP. We are currently investigating the endogenous function of these proteins, as well as genes connected to other pathways that control the response to BPs.

DLHS is seeking a highly motivated, talented postdoctoral scholar with experience in Collaborative Learning, Simulation-based training, and Multimodal Learning Analytics to join a dynamic research team with expertise in learning sciences, medical education, and computer science. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to two research strands. The first project focuses on the development of a novel debriefing system that aims to capture and visualize multimodal data streams from the fully immersive multi-user VR simulation environment to evaluate learners’ cognitive (e.g., clinical decision-making) and behavioral (e.g., situational awareness, communication) processes. Through this new multimodal debriefing system, instructors will be able to provide new insights and personalized feedback to clinicians during post-simulation debriefing sessions to allow for more meaningful reflection, targeted intervention, and rapid development of these complex skills in service to patients who suffer sudden medical emergencies.
