9. PhD Programs in theoretical computer science and/or combinatorial optimization

Summary of PhD Positions:

The MIAO research group has a unique profile in that we are doing cutting-edge research both on the mathematical foundations of efficient computation and on state-of-the-art practical algorithms for real-world problems. This creates a very special environment, where we do not only conduct in-depth research on different theoretical and applied topics, but where different lines of research cross-fertilise each other and unexpected and exciting synergies often arise.

Much of the activities of the group revolve around powerful algorithmic paradigms such as, e.g., Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solving, Gröbner basis computations, integer linear programming, and constraint programming. This leads to classical questions in computational complexity theory—though often with new, fascinating twists—but also involves work on devising clever algorithms that can exploit the power of such paradigms in practice.

12. PhD Programs in Architecture

Summary of PhD Positions:

The doctoral student will work within a project financed by the Swedish Construction Development Fund (SBUF). In this project, basic knowledge, tools and methodology are developed to enable the use of robotic 3d printing as a construction process. These can lead to concrete building systems that can be further developed into new business models, but also lay the foundation for future industry-related development projects. Specifically, we expect to make available methods to connect design tools with manufacturing methods, integrate data collection across multiple scales in robotic 3d printing, and create a process that is robust to variances in response to partially unstructured conditions.

16. PhD Programs in Molecular Biology, focus on molecular genetics of telomeres

Summary of PhD Positions:

The doctoral student will join the research group of Marita Cohn, in the subject area of Molecular Genetics, as part of the Molecular Cell Biology unit. The research topic encompasses fundamental research on molecular mechanisms that are responsible for the maintenance of telomere function in eukaryotic model systems. Telomeres are the nucleoprotein structures protecting the ends of chromosomes and are normally maintained by the enzyme telomerase. However, telomerase-deficient cells may restore telomere function by using recombination-based pathways, so-called Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres (ALT).

The PhD project will focus on elucidation of the genetic requirements and the molecular mechanisms responsible for the maintenance of telomeres in yeast cells, where both telomerase-dependent and ALT pathways are involved.
