3. Fully Funded PhD Position in power electronics

Summary of PhD Program:

The traditional power grid is dominated by passive components such as synchronous generators and transformers. This worked well with traditional primary energy sources such as coal, gas and nuclear, which connect to the grid through these large synchronous generators and can be located close to population centers. The future power grid will be dominated by power electronics. This is needed to connect large-scale renewable energy sources (eg wind and solar energy) as well as facilities for energy storage and power transmission such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC). Grid connected converters take over the role of grid control components.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in optimization of the electricity market

Summary of PhD Program:

European countries (including Sweden) are working towards a sustainable future with intermittent renewable sources. This green vision has brought several important challenges. One of the biggest challenges is the increasing complexity of the common day-ahead coupling (SDAC) model. Firstly, the trading period (MTU) is planned to be reduced from 1 hour to 15 minutes. This means an optimization model approximately four times as large as today. Second, both the amount and the number of types of non-convexities are expected to increase with an increasing share of intermittent renewable electricity generation. This leads to increased complexity in the calculation of uniform prices. Third, joint optimization of energy and balancing reserves in the day-ahead market requires innovative algorithms to solve the SDAC model.
