3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Learning on Graphs

Summary of PhD Program:

Graphs are playing an ever increasing role in nowadays systems as a flexible tool to model complex systems. In addition, these systems generate a vast amount of data which can be modelled as signals or features over these graphs. This is for instance the case of infrastructure networks such as water, energy and transportation networks but also the case of wind farms, solar grids and IoTs. Consequently, developing and using machine learning tools to process these graph data is more important than ever. Such a tools need not only capture the graph structure of the data but also account for the dynamics of the topology as practical graphs change over time.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in LLM-powered, Interactive and Aligned IDE

Summary of PhD Program:

An essential part of the success of Large Language Model (LLM)-based tools such as GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT is their interface. While some of these models’ capabilities were available before, the tools brought them to larger audiences without dramatically disrupting their workflow or requiring lots of additional steps. IDE users have their own workflows and the injection of new complex features, such as LLM-based ones, is a non-trivial task and there exists a significant space for innovation in the field of Human-AI interaction.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Spin Properties in Doped III-V Semiconductors

Summary of PhD Program:

Your PhD will be based at the TU Delft, a renowned hub for quantum nanoscience research and development. By performing Electro Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements inside an STM, you will help to start a new research project aimed at probing the spin properties of doped III-V semiconductors at the atomic scale. In recent years, ESR-STM has indeed proven its ability to measure and manipulate the spin of single atoms on insulating surfaces. Moreover, STM offers the possibility to design the spin system with atomic precision using atomic manipulation. Using these techniques on a different platform such as doped III-V semiconductors therefore opens the door to different spin systems, on which new effects can be investigated, such as spin-orbit interaction, or interaction with light.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Air-Sea Interaction and Wind Stress

Summary of PhD Program:

The presence of rich flow structures in the atmosphere and ocean down to the scales of atmospheric convection O (100 m – 10 km) has sparked renewed interest across atmospheric and ocean scientists in recent years. How does this diverse wind structure influence the exchange of energy and momentum through the air-sea interface, and impact weather and climate? Marine cumulus clouds, especially during rain, are one of the drivers of large wind variability and leave a clear imprint on ocean surface roughness seen in high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. These multi-scale, heterogeneous wind patterns may change the surface wind stress in ways we do not understand.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Design for Reusable Packaging Systems in the domain of FMCG

Summary of PhD Program:

We have an opening for a PhD candidate as part of the NWO KIC project ‘Re2Pack – Revolutionary Reusable Packaging’. Plastic packaging represents 40% of plastics used and comes with severe environmental impacts. Although use of more sustainable plastics has been proposed, this is only a partial solution. Reusable packaging systems (RPS) are more promising in reducing environmental impacts, yet have been subject to less integrated attention in science and society, potentially due to the complexity of the required system change. To address this, this project takes an interdisciplinary approach focused on value chains, consumer behaviour, and design, to introduce sustainable RPS (through increased recycled content for example).

23. Fully Funded PhD Position in Communication and Sensing with Drones using Light and AI

Summary of PhD Program:

Your research goal will be to create a new system for drone navigation and communication using the light bulbs in our houses and building, and cities. Drones are not fully trusted yet. Their reliance on radios and cameras for navigation raises safety and privacy concerns. These systems can fail, causing accidents, or be misused for unconsented recordings. We propose a radically new infrastructure where drones obtain communication and navigation solely from the light bulbs in our streets, roads and buildings. Modulated light intensity will allow drones to operate outdoors and indoors without the need for radios, GPS or cameras.
