3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Modelling of strain-rate effects in pharmaceutical tabletting

Summary of PhD Program:

During early-stage formulation and process development, scientists undergo extensive experimental screening campaigns and, although the tablet failure risk is reduced, there still exist risks that remain undetected and often cause issues during upscaling to production settings, leading to delays and at times undesired process changes. Being able to predict the compaction behaviour at different compression speeds, densities and compositions before formulations are transferred to large-scale production, will be a game changer in the tabletting field. Develop an experimental protocol to investigate the effect of the compression speed, tablet composition and powder characteristics on the tabletting performance.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Identifying morphological progression risk factors in oesophageal cancer

Summary of PhD Program:

Early detection of risk factors for oesophageal cancer can dramatically increase the survival rate for patients. Doctors often rely on numerous data sources to conclude a diagnosis, including medical history and pathology results. There is evidence that genomic data alone can predict the progression of cancer years before visible symptoms present themselves, however current computational risk prediction methods often only utilise one modality, e.g. histopathology images, or patient data. This project will aim to integrate these multi-modal features for risk prediction of oesophageal cancer by understanding the relationship between genomic data from biopsies, and anonymised patient medical history.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Dietary modulation of amino acids to improve chemotherapy response in breast cancer

Summary of PhD Program:

The successful applicant will work as part of a small, collaborative team of scientists in the Hannon lab working on tumour heterogeneity and will be supported by a fully-funded PhD studentship from Breast Cancer Now. Previous work in the lab has identified a subpopulation of triple negative breast cancer cells that are resistant to standard chemotherapy and which are highly dependent on non-essential amino acids. This project will build upon these findings and use pre-clinical and patient-derived models of breast cancer to study the effects of modulating the availability of specific amino acids through drugs or dietary changes on tumour growth and response to chemotherapy. The ultimate aim of project is to develop novel and more effective treatments for triple negative breast cancer and identify biomarkers of response to these interventions.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Artificial intelligence based early detection of signet ring cell carcinoma in hereditary diffuse gastric cancer patients

Summary of PhD Program:

Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) is a syndrome predisposing individuals to gastric cancer linked to mutation of the e-Cadherin gene (CDH1). Guidelines recommend prophylactic surgery with the view to prevent disease specific mortality, however a gastrectomy is linked to significant morbidity and impacts negatively to quality of life. Therefore, recently endoscopic surveillance has been proposed to assess the level of risk and detect early cancer, so that the best timing of prophylactic surgery is decided. Early signet ring cell carcinoma, however, is difficult to diagnose on standard endoscopy as the endoscopic features are very subtle. There is variation in practice in the pathological yield of biopsies even among expert centres. The aim of this project is to test and validate machine learning and deep learning methods to improve the diagnosis of early cancer in individuals with HDGC. This project is expected to lead to the development of an AI system that can assist the physician to diagnose early signet ring cancer, with high accuracy, during endoscopic surveillance of individuals with HDGC, ultimately improving the diagnosis of of sporadic gastric cancer.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Uncovering the chemical origin of lipid membrane diversity

Summary of PhD Program:

The origin of cell membranes is a major unresolved issue in evolution. Evolutionary biology points to the existence of primitive cells with compositionally diverse membranes. However, the assumption that such lipid diversity is dependent upon enzymatic chemistry has generated models comprising compositionally minimal membranes (binary or ternary mixtures of short-chain fatty or phosphatidic acids). This project aims to reconcile biology and chemistry by challenging the critical limiting assumption that lipid diversity cannot be achieved through non-enzymatic chemistries. The project will lead to a fundamental understanding of the origins of lipid diversity, including the features now associated with bacterial and archaeal lipids; new strategies based on compositionally diverse membranes to probe, sense or replicate cellular behaviours; and a deep-rooted understanding of the emergence and evolution of cellular processes at the molecular level.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine-Learning Guided Compilation

Summary of PhD Program:

Creating optimised libraries is a difficult and time-consuming task, requiring significant manual engineering effort. This process must be repeated for each new processor to take advantage of additional features, especially when it implements the latest architecture with new instructions or significant new architectural extensions, like Arm’s SVE and SME. However, advances in machine learning point towards a low-cost solution to this task by automating code generation through a series of provably correct steps. A machine-learning model will guide the search for optimised code sequences, learning the best instructions to use for given intermediate code fragments and alleviating manual engineering effort.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in determination of the structure and performance of organic friction modifiers

Summary of PhD Program:

Improvements in fuel economy are a major driver in the lubricants industry. Fuel economy shows an inverse relationship with friction and hence there have been a number of methods employed to reduce friction in engines such as the use of organic friction modifiers and understanding how they operate will allow optimised formulations to be devised. The prize is large with over 20% of global CO2 emissions being due to road transport. Additionally internal combustion engines are being phased out, and the industrial sponsor is keen to apply their leading knowledge to new business areas, wherever moving contact points exist. It is noted that 25% of the worlds energy use is used overcoming friction.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Turbomachinery for Future Energy Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

This project addresses this by developing design methods to improve the performance of turbomachines operating with non-conventional or ‘advanced’ fluids, which can be used to reduce energy demand and improve energy efficiency. These advanced fluids include dense-gases (such as organic vapours) and supercritical fluids (such as super-critical CO2) and are fundamental to low-carbon energy systems using Organic Rankine Cycles and sCO2 cycles. These systems are important for a range of technologies including Heat Recovery and CHP, Carbon Capture, Hydrogen Gas Turbines and Renewables. Advanced fluids can be used as working fluids for heat management systems and to augment the performance of a gas-turbine prime mover.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human-data interfaces on construction projects

Summary of PhD Program:

Within the construction industry, there are established legacy processes which predate the digital age. These processes facilitate the delivery of projects and collate documentation for future reference. However, often, data is collected without structure or digitisation which hinders value creation from knowledge management and does not allow for big data analytics. Physical forms, unstructured excel and visual data (such as drawings and photos) form a large proportion of the information collected and used on construction projects.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Effects of scattering models on LWR core analyses

Summary of PhD Program:

A fully paid PhD studentship is offered at the Cambridge University Engineering Department in the area of nuclear reactor core analysis methods development. It is offered under Industrial Cooperative Awards in Science & Technology (iCASE) scheme of the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in collaboration with EDF Energy, the owner and operator of the UK nuclear reactor fleet.

The safety and operational performance of reactor cores relies on simulation tools which are used, with appropriate uncertainties, to set operating limits and determine operational practices on the nuclear fuel and the reactor core. Improved accuracy of tools as well as understanding of their deficiencies can ensure safety margins are appropriately set and allow more flexible and less constrained operation, contributing directly to cost reduction of nuclear power.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neural control of body homeostasis and pain: an information engineering approach

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project uses an information engineering approach to unravel the dynamic neural mechanisms orchestrating the maintenance of body homeostasis and endogenous pain regulation. Endogenous pain regulation refers to the intrinsic ability of the central nervous system to modulate the intensity and perception of pain. Unlike exogenous interventions such as medications, endogenous regulation involves the body’s internal mechanisms for controlling and mitigating harm. This intricate process encompasses a network of neural circuits and neurotransmitter systems that dynamically interact to either enhance or suppress the transmission of bodily signals.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Long-span timber-hybrid cellular beams for more sustainable structural design

Summary of PhD Program:

Reducing the environmental impact of the built environment requires more sustainable structural design. This means using better structural materials and using structural materials better. Achieving efficient, constructable solutions for floor systems that require both long spans and flexible service layouts has been a barrier to the adoption of new lower net carbon materials, such as engineered timber, in the commercial building sector worldwide. The aim of this project is thus to develop, test and produce design guidance for timber-hybrid cellular beam solutions for long-span floor systems.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Engineering Interfaces

Summary of PhD Program:

With the emergence of low-cost renewable energy sources and our societal push for decarbonization, it has become attractive to utilize renewable electrons to drive important industrial reactions such as ammonia synthesis and hydrogen production and to address issues related to sustainability such as emissions capture and conversion. However, conventional porous catalytic materials currently in use are designed for thermal processes, and they are inefficient in storing and using charges at the catalytic interface to affect reaction performance. Our research group has the capability to engineer these catalytic interfaces to improve electron transport and storage using a robust atom-by-atom deposition methodology inspired from thin film technologies such as Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAM).

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Energy and material requirements of desalination: a global assessment

Summary of PhD Program:

Climate change and human demands are threatening water supplies worldwide. To respond to water scarcity, countries around the world are increasingly investing in desalination. Over the last decade, the costs of desalination have dropped, making this technology affordable for a broader range of contexts and uses. Global installed desalination capacity reached 61.8 million m3/day in 2020 (equivalent to 4.5 percent of global domestic water use). In the next two years, scenarios suggest that an additional capacity of 26.1 million m3/day (equivalent to 42 percent of current capacity) will be contracted out. Moreover, interest in green hydrogen is expected to further boost the demand for desalination.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

The progress in fundamental science and technology has allowed researchers to explore intriguing, but often elusive, quantum effects in atoms, ions and semiconductor nanostructures. Cryogenic temperatures and complex trapping techniques are often required to be able to access these fragile quantum states. Surprisingly, despite the requirement of relatively high temperatures and condensed-phase operation, there is growing evidence that some biological molecules could host superpositions of quantum states. For instance, there is currently a debate on whether quantum effects might be at the basis of the almost unitary efficiency in the energy transfer of the light absorbed from the sun, that has been observed in natural photosynthetic light harvesters.
