2. Fully Funded PhD Position in sedimentary geochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The emergence of calcifying plankton in the oceans shifted the major carbonate production from the shallow seas to the open marine realm with large consequences on the carbonate saturation of the oceans and their buffering capacities. Evolution of the key organisms occurred during the Late Triassic. At the same time, the supercontinent Pangea started to break up, with large-scale tectonic reorganizations and significant changes in weathering and nutrient enrichment with major implications for marine biogeochemical cycles. Our understanding of the causes and effects of all these changes is still limited. This project intends to explore the hypothesized link between the changes in seawater chemistry, their causes and the emergence of planktonic calcification.

Fully Funded PhD Position in Energy Sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

In the EU-funded project Circular Fuels involving nine participating organizations from seven EU countries, we will integrate concentrated solar heat (CSH), solar electrical energy using PV panels, and thermochemical conversion of bio-based waste materials to produce sustainable transportation fuels for aviation. The use of solar energy removes the need to burn any fraction of the pyrolysis products to heat the pyrolysis process, allowing us to use the by-products of pyrolysis for other purposes. Our main objective is to maximize the fraction of jet fuel, kerosine, and analyze all component fractions that may be suitable as other transportation fuel products to maximize the profitability of the concept.
