3. Fully Funded PhD Position in space physics

Summary of PhD Program:

Plasma flares give rise to some of the most beautiful phenomena in the universe, such as the aurora borealis, but they can also cause damage to important technological infrastructure on ground or in space. However, it is still unknown what conditions are required to create eruptions with extremely strong energy flows. The project combines theoretical and experimental competences from both space and laboratory plasma physics to understand which combination of effects creates extreme flares. The project will focus on the analysis of experimental data from NASA and ESA space missions MMS and Cluster. The goal is to identify the extreme plasma flares related to magnetic reconnection and auroral acceleration, and to identify the physical mechanisms responsible for the electron acceleration within these flares. The work will be done in close collaboration with IRF, Uppsala and Chalmers.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in nonlinear data-driven control

Summary of PhD Program:

Autonomous systems, such as self-driving cars, rely on advanced control algorithms to make decisions and navigate complex environments, such as Model Predictive Control (MPC). However, traditional MPC methods are limited by the accuracy and availability of models. With the increasing availability of sensor data, data-driven MPC has emerged as a promising solution but most current approaches are limited to linear systems. This project aims at breaking the barriers to nonlinear data-driven MPC, by developing tools for nonlinear state estimation (based on differential-geometric methods), novel neural network architectures for mapping past data into optimal controls and efficient experiment design techniques for data collection.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Fluid Mechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

Turbulent flow has a major impact in many areas of engineering, not least in terms of frictional resistance to vehicles or the efficiency of turbo machines. In the project, we look at how the flow on turbine blades in turbo machines is affected by incoming turbulence and the presence of shock waves, and assess turbine efficiency. The flow is very complicated and we use large simulations on the most powerful supercomputers as a numerical wind tunnel to investigate how the boundary layer – shock interaction and turbulence affect the flow on the surface of the turbine, and analyze the large data sets produced via modern analysis methods. Among other things, we use modern analysis tools from dynamic system theory and signal processing to understand the complex flow.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Liquid-infused surface in flowing fluids

Summary of PhD Program:

We are currently seeking PhD students in fluid mechanics to join the LUBFLOW team. This position provides an exciting opportunity for talented and motivated researchers to work on a cutting-edge research project. A lubricant-infused surface (LIS) is a structured surface infused with a viscous liquid layer. These slippery surfaces are partially inspired by the carnivorous Nepenthes pitcher plant. LISs have shown great promise for reducing fluid friction, preventing biofouling and increasing heat transfer in fluid flows. However, the behaviour of LISs in realistic flow environments is very difficult to predict. LUBFLOW will therefore investigate LISs in fluid flows that include turbulence, surfactants, and bacteria. This could lead to better control of fluid flows and broad technological advancements.
