10. PhD Position in Virtual sensing strategies from optical fiber measurements in mechanical systems

Summary of PhD Positions:

This PhD is part of a project aiming to develop a novel approach for virtual sensing of dynamic quantities (strains, stresses, forces) in mechanical systems, exploiting fiber optical measurements in the considered structures. These types of sensors have shown great potential over the past decades due to the distributed nature of the information which can be extracted. However, in order to robustly apply these sensors, a proper correction for the connection between the thermal and structural behavior of the system under study is key. There is therefore great potential in estimation or observer frameworks which allow to combine thermo-mechanical models together with these measurements in order to obtain an accurate view on the operational behavior of the system.

11. PhD Position in a mathematical framework for the modelling of complex energy systems

Summary of PhD Positions:

This PhD research is part of the project “Control algorithms for flexibility in power-to-X and industrial processes (InduFlexControl-2)”, the general objective of which is to develop data-driven modelling techniques and control methodologies, harness flexibility in the energy-intensive industry and enable its active participation in the energy transition while remaining cost-efficient and low in CO2 emissions. The PhD focus will be consider/develop and compare white-box models (purely based on physical principles, governing equations), black-box models (purely based on data) and grey-box models (combining physical principles and data) to help redesigning and improving energy-intensive processes (reduced cost and more environmentally friendly), with particular attention to energy conversion (possibly between unconventional energy carriers, so-called power-to-X) and energy storage technologies.

13. PhD Position in Theory, Design and Characterization of Optical Singularities in Nanostructured Objects

Summary of PhD Positions:

The most recent drastic advancement in nanotechnology has paved the path towards the investigation of many extreme nano-optical effects. There, optical singularities, i.e., the very spatial points where physical parameters describing electromagnetic fields are undefined, have been attracting growing attention from both the physics and engineering communities, for their potential applications in manipulating and trapping microparticles, optical communication and super resolution, to name a few. The very objective of this doctoral study is, based on a solid theoretical understanding, to design plasmonic/dielectric nanostructures to efficiently exploit structured light in the near field regime of the aforesaid structures and their associated optical singularities, including, phase singularities, polarization singularities, to name a few.

15. PhD Position in Smart Sensors for Shape-Adaptable Shoe Insoles for Diabetic Patients

Summary of PhD Positions:

For diabetic patients, special care needs to be given to the extremities in the body such as the foot. Therefore, shoe insoles are carefully designed to minimize the pressures on the foot during daily activities. However, there is still a need for a reactive patient-targeted approach. In this Ph.D. project, the candidate will investigate new technologies for sensing coatings with the application in shoe insoles to design flexible electronics to sense and detect excess local pressures. The design and development of sensing coatings and electronics is very challenging as pressures need to be measured with high sensitivity at a high load.

16. PhD Position in Ultra-dense sustainable networks for wireless battery management

Summary of PhD Positions:

In this project, we aim to make wireless communications more sustainable and scalable. We will design, from hardware to protocol stack, a lightweight communication solution that allows reliable monitoring with a small electronics footprint. To this end, we will start from known short-range internet of things (IoT) communications such as Bluetooth low energy (BLE). We will then explore how to gradually rely on less hardware, by moving processing and analog functions to over-the-air methods. This means that the operation is executed in the air, and there is no need to have a hardware device in each of the ultra-dense battery cells. By doing so, we will be able to reduce the footprint of wireless devices by using less hardware, which also contributes to making wireless devices more energy efficient.

17. PhD Position in Building blocks for open disaggregated 6G radio access networks

Summary of PhD Positions:

The goal of this research project is to focus on synchronisation of the different distributed SDR nodes. While synchronisation of radios and clocks is known, it is not know today how to do it in a scalable or sustainable way. Without proper synchronisation, our future generation networks will not function as they could . The main opportunities in this project are, next to working in a state-of-the-art research lab, the cooperation with industry and academia in Europe, but also beyond, on the new wave called 6G.

18. PhD Position in Optimizing Antibacterial Dosing in Special Patient Populations

Summary of PhD Positions:

The dosing of antibiotics – and many other drugs – has been derived from rather stable patient populations. However, it is now widely accepted that standard doses are not adequate (i.e., unacceptable efficacy and/or toxicity) in patients with severe bacterial infections, who show extensive pharmacokinetic variability. This is often referred to as the ‘one dose does not fit all’ paradigm. Over the last decade, our research group contributed substantially to the identification and characterisation of inappropriate antimicrobial dosing. In partnership with the Leuven Pharmacometrics group, we modelled the exposure to several antibiotics and simulated different optimized dosing strategies. We are now taking the next step, which is to validate these dosing strategies and to evaluate their effect on clinical outcome.
