1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Imaging and Analysis of Nanomaterials
Summary of PhD Program:
In this PhD project, you will develop electron microscopy as a new analytical tool for chemistry that may revolutionise the way we study molecules and their reactions. Some of the greatest challenges of materials chemistry, such as structures of nanocrystalline covalent organic framework (COF) or metal organic framework (MOF) materials, as well as atomic dynamics and reactivity of metal nanoclusters supported on 2D materials (e.g. graphene, hexagonal boron nitride) will be addressed by the new methods. You will become part of the multidisciplinary project team and will build on over 20 years of expertise in atomic scale imaging and analysis of nanomaterials available in Prof. Andrei Khlobystov’s group (including their recent works on 3D analysis of COFs, single-molecule dynamics, and nanocluster catalysis imaged in real time).

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Supramolecular organic chemistry
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will seek to design novel metal-organic coordination complexes constructed from lanthanide ions as opposed to the more commonly encountered transition metal ions. Lanthanides have larger coordination numbers than transition metals and more flexible coordination geometries and so traditionally have received a lot less attention than transition metals for the construction of self-assembled architectures. However, the unpaired electrons in lanthanide metal ions offer many interesting opportunities to develop structures with interesting electronic, optical, or magnetic properties. This project will build upon some exciting recent unpublished results of our group in this area.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine learning for chemistry
Summary of PhD Program:
Applications are invited for PhD Studentships, starting October 2023, in the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. 5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of the Mg battery
Summary of PhD Program:
We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student to work with our Magnesium battery team and with our industrial collaborators. The Mg electrode has almost twice the volumetric capacity of metallic Li and a five-fold increase compared to today’s graphite electrodes. The battery could also provide cost and sustainability advantages over Li-ion due to the natural abundance of Mg. The candidate will work within the Nottingham Applied Materials and Interfaces Group at the University of Nottingham.

This project will involve the development of electrochemical techniques to modify peptides via desulfurative, decarboxylative, and deoxygenative radical chemistry. 9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Synthesis of Monomers and Degradable Polymers from Renewable Feedstocks
Summary of PhD Program:

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mechanisms of resistance of barley hybrids to Barley yellow dwarf virus and aphid vectors
Summary of PhD Program:
Alate (winged) cereal aphids are the first colonisers of a new host. These aphids can transmit Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) infecting the barley plant and causing significant crop losses. Novel resistance traits introduced in barley hybrids by Syngenta are hypothesized to elicit partial or complete immunity of the host, however the mechanism/s of resistance, including molecular basis, and effectiveness against viruliferous and non-viruliferous aphids or BYDV transmission and severity are not fully understood. This PhD project will characterise and define the mechanisms that underpin novel BYDV resistance in barley hybrids using crop pathology, physiology and omics approaches.

In this project in collaboration with Quorn® we focus on structuring the fungal protein and its constituents to deliver healthier, sustainable, and low CO2 footprint meat analogues that match consumer expectations and improve acceptability. Summary of PhD Program:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a PhD candidate to gain experience in protein crystallography applied to the fields of enzymology and parasitology at the University of Nottingham in the group of Dr Ivan Campeotto. The group focuses on structure-guided development of vaccine prototypes and inhibitors against several neglected diseases, caused by parasites and emerging viruses. Some antigens have also been recently targeted for the development of antigenic and serological tests. 13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of new machine learning methods and algorithms
Summary of PhD Program:
Managing natural processes is one of the most practical and effective implementable approaches to removing CO2 from the atmosphere. It is imperative to measure carbon sequestered by natural means accurately, to understand process drivers and uncertainties and to accelerate nature-based carbon sequestration. Soil can store or sequester carbon through microbiological activity, providing a nature-based sink for CO2. However, poorly managed soils can release carbon as CO2 or methane (CH4) to the atmosphere-contributing to climate change and reducing soil health and fertility.

Waste heat generated by UK industry and power generation sectors exceeds the UK’s total annual electricity demand by around thirty percent. Industrial waste heat sources alone account for around one sixth of the overall industrial yearly energy use. Apart from the industrial sector, there is also vast amount of waste heat from renewable energy sources such as solar and geothermal. It is therefore imperative to utilise efficiently all possible waste heat.
