3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Prevention of type-2-diabetes after gestational diabetes

Summary of PhD Program:

Gestational diabetes (GDM) may have serious short- and long-term consequences for both woman and child. Although glucose levels generally normalise after delivery, GDM increases the risk sevenfold for type-2-diabetes (T2D) within a ten-year period. Several studies show that the T2D risk after GDM can be reduced by lifestyle interventions and that early detection of impaired glucose tolerance is of great importance. There is currently, however, no satisfactory follow-up program after GDM leading to missed cases and delayed diagnosis of T2D. The objective of the PhD project is to measure and determine behavioural and biological factors important for disease progression from GDM to IGT/T2D, and to intervene by internet-based lifestyle modifications to reduce identified risks.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease

Summary of PhD Program:

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases and it is estimated that more than 100,000 people are affected in Sweden. Research over the last 30 years has shown that the pathological changes in the brain can be attributed to different protein aggregates composed of amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau protein in the form of plaques and tangles, respectively. Studies have shown that in AD there is a very strong association between tau aggregates and Aβ-containing plaques. However, neither the mechanism behind tau aggregation nor the actual connection between Aβ and tau is currently known. It is not known how these processes lead to AD symptoms or what triggers the disease.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in B cells in Neoehrlichia mikurensis infection

Summary of PhD Program:

Mononuclear cells from patients with malignant B-cell lymphomas, with and without N. mikurensis infection, are stimulated with bacterial and endothelial antigens and phenotyped regarding 23 different B-cell markers, and the generated multiparameter data is analyzed by Helios mass cytometry and cluster analyses. Comparisons are made with the B- and T-cells responses evoked by the infection in patients with normal immune defenses and without malignant B-cell lymphoma. In silico analyses of the N. mikurensis genome, bacterial extracts, and recombinant bacterial proteins and peptides are employed to develop high-throughput antibody diagnostics for N. mikurensis. The image flow cytometry method for antibody analysis is used for comparison.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neutrophils role in inflammatory arthritis

Summary of PhD Program:

Inflammatory arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthritis are chronic diseases characterized by inflammation of the joints. The use of novel therapies has led to substantial improvements in clinical outcomes for patients suffering from inflammatory arthritis. However, a large unmet clinical need persists as 30-50% of patients with moderate or severe inflammatory arthritis have no- or suboptimal improvement in their symptoms despite these treatments. Thus, better understanding of disease pathogenesis is urgently needed to aid in the development of new drugs to reduce suffering of patients unresponsive to the currently available therapies.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Health Care Sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

The focus of PhD project is the shift towards person-centred integrated healthcare. Ethical stress, high workload and job dissatisfaction may lead to difficulties recruiting and retaining health professionals in hospitals, primary care and municipal health and social care. A person-centred approach to health and social care has the potential to improve the work environment and work-related health among health, and there is a lack of knowledge on how the shift towards person-centred integrated care affects health professionals across healthcare settings. The overarching aim with this project is therefore to follow, describe and evaluate the meaning of a person-centred approach for work-related health and job satisfaction among health professionals in hospital, primary care and municipal health and social care. In the project, both quantitative and qualitative methods will be used.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Thyroid hormone transporters

Summary of PhD Program:

Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in regulating many physiological processes in the body. They are involved in a variety of interconnected signaling pathways and are critical for growth, metabolism, and development. These hormones are tightly regulated through a feedback loop involving the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and thyroid gland axis. Their activity is also regulated through their transport across the plasma membrane. This enables their access to specific nuclear receptors, allowing them to modulate various cellular processes at the gene level. The tight regulation of thyroid hormone levels is essential for maintaining normal physiological function and preventing disease. The objective of this doctoral project is to structurally and functionally characterize these transporters to obtain information about their molecular architecture and organization.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Structure-function of zinc transport in humans

Summary of PhD Program:

Zinc is the second most abundant transition metal in the body, second only to iron. An estimated 10% of the human proteome are zinc binding proteins of which methallotheins and zinc transporters are the most crucial for maintaining the homeostasis of chelatable zinc in the cell. Being integral membrane proteins, the study of their structure has historically posed challenges as their purification from recombinant expression is dependent on detergents and other lipid reconstitutions for their stability and function. Structurally determining transporters implicated in neural disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease is a crucial step in understanding the function and protein dynamics involved in pathogenesis.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cancer genomics and bioinformatics

Summary of PhD Program:

Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) is an early stage of blood cancer development, where a large fraction of blood cells originates from a single hematopoietic stem cell lineage. CH can be detected in DNA sequencing data from blood cells of healthy individuals based on somatic genetic variants. CH carries an increased risk of leukemia and age-related diseases. Recently, we distinguished two groups of clonal hematopoiesis and stratified risk of developing distinct types of blood cancers (Niroula et al., Nature Medicine 2021). In this PhD project, we aim to identify new genetic variants underlying CH and identify regulators of CH development. The findings will be used for predicting the risk of developing blood cancer. This data-driven project will involve large-scale analysis of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of next generation probiotics

Summary of PhD Program:

The human body is colonized by trillions of microorganisms that cover all surfaces. The types and numbers of microorganisms differ at different body sites where they form specific communities (microbiota). The gut is host to the most densely populated microbiota and is dominated by selected Bacteria from a small number of phyla but with high diversity at species and strain level. Our knowledge of the gut microbiota has greatly expanded over the last three decades, and it is now clearly recognized that the gut microbiota affects the regulation of both immune and metabolic functions. Indeed, alterations to the gut microbiota have been found in different diseases including type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, intestinal bowel diseases and certain types of cancer.
