1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Climate Sciences: Next-generation vegetation modelling
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will tackle one of the major sources for uncertainty in climate and Earth system projections reliable predictions of how water and nutrients govern vegetation, carbon and water cycling, and their responses to a changing climate and CO2. The aim is to integrate eco-evolutionary optimality theory and observational constraints into a dynamic model for simulating global land ecosystem functioning and structure. You will innovate towards a next-generation vegetation model by combining improved ecosystem process understanding and first principles, numerical modelling, and model-data integration methods. Your work will extend the model developed and maintained in our group, integrating novel theory development by the LEMONTREE project partners. You will apply the model for testing novel theory against different observational data,

8. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
With global warming, global animal and goods traffic, and increased contact between wild animals and humans, the risk of the introduction of “new,” potentially zoonotic viruses is increasing. As the national reference laboratory for viral animal diseases, the IVI uses the most modern technologies to research the viral spectrum, the so-called virome, and to detect emerging viruses that may pose a risk to animal and human health at an early stage.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
Cough in Equine Asthma – Surveys among horse owners and development of AI-supported, non-invasive diagnostics. Cough is an important key symptom of equine asthma and other inflammatory respiratory diseases, but is difficult to quantify because of its sporadic occurrence and is often underestimated or not at all by horse owners perceived. In order to exploit the diagnostic potential of coughs, we are developing a wearable device and artificial intelligence for automatic long-term monitoring of coughs. The central task of the doctoral position is the clinical and scientific work for the development and validation of this new telemedical diagnostics in collaboration with specialists as part of technological development and data analysis.
