2. Fully Funded PhD Position in phytohormone physiology and biochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Plants are exposed to multiple abiotic stresses like drought, submergence, radiation and soil toxicity, resulting in growth adaptations. Several plant hormones are known as crucial players in the control of stress responses. Among these ethylene, ABA, and jasmonic acid are well-known. Hormone metabolism determines their steady state, and some metabolites serve particular additional roles. This project aims to unravel how and under which form ACC and jasmonic acid control responses to stress e.g. flooding and drought. The following techniques will be used: transcriptomics, metabolomics, in situ mass spectrometric imaging, live cell microscopy, and the analysis of oxidative stress markers.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in functional and ecological morphology, behavior and genomics of cichlids

Summary of PhD Program:

You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis on functional trade-offs, behavior and genomics related to trophic flexibility in cichlids. You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis on functional trade-offs, behaviour and genomics related to trophic flexibility in cichlids. While most cichlid species have evolved behavioural and morphological adaptations to specific dietary niches, they also have retained the possibility to feed on other food types. Hence, the flexibility of the feeding apparatus to deal with different food types and the behavioural characteristics that promote opportunistic foraging are important factors in the feeding ecology of cichlids.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in ecotoxicology exploring phytoremediation for PFAS cleanup

Summary of PhD Program:

The widespread use of PFAS in industrial and consumer applications has led to a global distribution of these synthetic chemicals in the environment. Here, they persist for many years, bioaccumulate in organisms, and may cause toxic effects to wildlife and humans. Remediation of PFAS-contaminated soils is, however, extremely challenging. You will build on recent findings about the phytoremediation of PFAS in terrestrial environments, using both laboratory and field-based studies. You will study, among others, the factors that affect the phytoremediation potential of specific plant species. In addition, you will investigate the applicability and potential implementation of phytoremediation and phytomanagement using multidisciplinary approaches.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in assessing the chemical safety of new insect feed streams containing microplastics and related additives for rearing black soldier fly larvae

Summary of PhD Program:

The EntoBOOST project has three objectives: i) Explore if and how stress in insects can be measured by monitoring insect metabolome and behaviour to contribute to the development of science-based guidelines to score insect welfare, ii) Fill research gaps on safety of pre-consumer organic waste streams containing microplastics and/or spore-forming food pathogens to enable safe use of insect feed substrates that do not compete with food or feed production, and iii) Identify which bio-active insect fractions drive observed beneficial effects on gut health in farm animals and define how these effects can be better conserved during processing. This research project will be carried out by a consortium of the leading Flemish research groups in the field of edible insects working together to resolve several urgent challenges for insect production and usage with direct relevance for multiple potential users.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in entometabolomics: investigating the factors affecting the insect metabolome and its relationship with stress and welfare

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project will be mostly executed at the Toxicological Centre (TC, UA), whose main competences relate to various aspects of the exposomics, such as human and environmental exposure risk assessment and monitoring, and metabolomics, where particular attention is given to the development and optimization of (bio)analytical comprehensive workflows for polar metabolites and lipids. We use MS-based metabolomics to elucidate toxicity mechanisms and pathways by identifying changes in cellular/tissue metabolites after exposure to toxicants and stress factors and providing essential input in the characterization of toxicity and exposure pathways of humans and other organisms to chemicals.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in computational neurogenomics

Summary of PhD Program:

The overarching goal of this proposal is to understand why and how dysregulation of omnipresent and constantly expressed ARS proteins leads to dying-back neurodegeneration and affects specifically the peripheral neurons (PNs). This neuronal population contains the most polarized cells in our body and their sophisticated morphology and function render them highly susceptible to degeneration. The preliminary data generated in-house as well as the available public data suggest mechanisms involving genetic, epigenetic and chromatin organisation factors governing the cell-type specific response to ARS mutations. Therefore, an integrative genome-wide cis-regulatory network analysis approaches, developed and employed in the Malysheva Lab, are required to reveal these mechanisms.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in musculoskeletal magnetic resonance imaging

Summary of PhD Program:

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is key for diagnosing musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries and monitoring after therapy. The principal goal of this PhD project is to apply and evaluate a super-resolution reconstruction (SRR) framework for anatomical and quantitative imaging of the MSK system, with a particular focus on internal derangement of joints and skeletal muscle injuries. SRR qMRI could open up exciting possibilities to help inform return to sports after MSK injury and evaluate the effectiveness of new treatments. Sequence optimization is performed in collaboration with the imec-Vision Lab of UAntwerp (dept. of physics). Finally, sequences will be tested in volunteers and patients at the MRI department of the Antwerp University Hospital (UZA).
