Summary of PhD Program:

For the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons under the direction of Prof. Sachse, you will be working on cryo-EM studies of membrane remodelling proteins in the field of Structural Biology at our institute. The Sachse lab recently determined a series of cryo-EM structures of bacterial as well as eukaryotic members of the endosomal sorting complexes required for transport (ESCRT) protein family. In order to gain a deep structural understanding, we biochemically purify and reconstitute ESCRT protein complexes in lipid environments and visualize them by cryo-EM methods. You will be working in a network of membrane biological research and latest cryo-EM infrastructure.

The Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Stratosphere (IEK-7) and related universities are building a series of Spatial Heterodyne Spectrometers (SHS) for remote sensing of the Earth atmosphere. The activities are part of the International Satellite Program in Research and Education (INSPIRE) and a European Union funded activity to study innovative technologies in space. Scheduled launch dates for these novel instruments are from 2023 to 2026. The scientific objectives of the measurements are addressing open science questions related to the dynamics of the Upper Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere. Summary of PhD Program:

The quality and quantity of Earth Observation (EO) data is increasing at a high rate. However its volume makes handing the data challenging, especially as the bandwidths between data centers do not grow accordingly. In your PhD, you will develop AI methods to enhance the accessibility and analysis of a vast amount of high-resolution, multi-source EO data. You will research ML methods of encode and compress high-volume EO data into practical, much smaller representations and scale them to large datasets on our supercomputers. These techniques are designed to efficiently exchange massive geospatial data for few-shots learning, and facilitating real-time searchers on petabyte-scale data. This research will take place within the scope of the recently funded EU project, Embed2Scale.
