1. Postdoctoral Position
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Optoacoustic imaging combines the versatile contrast of optical imaging with the deep penetration of ultrasound imaging. These characteristics give optoacoustic imaging a competitive edge over other imaging methods currently applied in biology and medicine. Raster Scanning Optoacoustic Mesoscopy (RSOM) is a novel modality that has been already employed in human studies to quantify psoriasis burden and remission due to treatment (Nature Biomedical Engineering 2017, Science Translational Medicine 2022) and visualize vasculature associated with melanoma formation (Nature communications 2022).
The successful candidate will develop instrumentation that improves the high resolution of RSOM with pulsed diode powered excitation and locked-in detection to allow obtaining cellular resolution in several millimeters’ depth in the live animal. The project is a joint effort with other renowned laboratories from France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, that contribute for example AI based data analysis as well as custom electronics and ultrasound-transducer development. Hence the successful candidate will not only develop instrumentation but also function as the link between the partner groups – resulting in truly international and interdisciplinary work.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The research activities at the Chair of Nutrition and Immunology, headed by Prof. Dr. Dirk Haller, focus on the interplay of nutrition and the intestinal microbiome in shaping human health. Changes in the composition and function of this complex microbial ecosystem contribute to the development of chronic intestinal diseases, including inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer. A major scientific focus of the Chair of Nutrition and Immunology is to identify functionally and clinically relevant microbial mediators in the context of intestinal tissue injury & healing. This project will investigate the integration of microbial signals at the intestinal epithelial interface in patients and murine models targeting unfolded protein response-driven colorectal cancer and colitis-associated cancer.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The application of stabilized mRNA as a vehicle for the biosynthesis of proteins in vivo has not only recently led to considerable success in vaccination with viral antigens, but also holds great potential for the indirect administration of protein drugs in various medical indications. This also opens up new possibilities for organ-specific application. In addition, the effort involved in drug production during the translation from research to clinical application is significantly lower in the case of biochemically simpler nucleic acids than for proteins with their complex GMP processes. As part of the cluster C-NAT Min cooperation with the TUM Institute for Virology, Prof. Dr. Ulrike Protzer, and on the basis of preliminary work by our working groups with active protein substances, a novel mRNA-based therapy for hepatitis B with improved interferons can be developed and tested in cell cultures and in mouse models. The focus of the position to be filled in our laboratory is on nucleic acid and protein biochemistry as well as initial cell culture experiments.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The Chair for Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Real-Time Systems (Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Alois Knoll) at the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology (CIT) conducts research as part of the MANNHEIM-CeCaS funding projectin the areas of software architecture and model-based development. The technical requirements of autonomous driving pose completely new challenges for the development of vehicles and the associated highly complex functions. The enormous amounts of data recorded by sensors have to be processed in sophisticated calculations. This requires the development of more powerful computing architectures with application-specific AI accelerators. The high complexity of these systems with a constantly growing number of highly integrated software components in a domain characterized by real-time and security requirements is difficult to master with classic development approaches.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The project is part of the 2nd phase of the DFG research unit “SEHAG – „Sensitivity of high Alpine geosystems to climate change since 1850 “that investigates the impact of climate change on high Alpine geosystems since the end of the Little Ice Age (1850). Scientists of various disciplines (clima-tology, geomorphology, hydrology, vegetation and photogrammetry) collaborate closely to develop for the first time a reconstruction of the historical development of high Alpine geosystems, based on the case studies of Kaunertal and Horlachtal in Austria, and Martelltal in Italy. The second phase started on 01.04.2022 and runs until 31.03.2025. The first ongoing project phase focused on changes in geosystems and their causes from 1850 to the present day. In the second phase, field data collec-tion will be further completed, along with improved model parameterizations for all studied subsys-tems (glaciers, permafrost, vegetation, hydrology, etc.), to enable a model-based analyses of poten-tial future developments up to 2050, based on data from dynamically downscaled climate model pro-jections.

In a national research project, methods for the optimized operation of cells in the module are to be developed together with partners from industry. These methods should be based on advanced sensor technology and new model approaches. The tasks as a research assistant consist of the further development of existing test benches for the thermal and electrical characterization of lithium-ion cells. For this purpose, measurements must be planned, carried out and evaluated accordingly. Based on the cell characterization, BMS-capable thermal and electrical models are to be created. A particular focus is on optimized operational management, taking into account any inhomogeneities in the module.
