1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics with focus on Modeling Water Plumes of the Icy Moons
Summary of PhD Program:
Enceladus and Europa, two of the most fascinating moons in our solar system, are known for their water plumes — jets of water vapor and other materials erupting from beneath the icy surfaces of these moons. Enceladus, a moon of Saturn, has water plumes that spew from its south pole, sourced from a subsurface ocean beneath its icy crust. Europa, one of Jupiter’s Galilean moons, has also shown evidence of plumes, likely caused by water escaping through cracks in its ice shell. These features strongly suggest the presence of vast liquid water oceans beneath the icy surfaces of these moons, positioning both moons as prime targets in the search for extraterrestrial life.
Application Deadline: 2025-02-28
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics with focus on the Aurora at Jupiter’s Moon Ganymede
Summary of PhD Program:
Ganymede is one of Jupiter’s moons, and it is the largest moon in the solar system. Ganymede has its own magnetic field, and its orbit around Jupiter is inside of Jupiter’s magnetosphere. This makes for a peculiar magnetic field configuration, and auroral light emissions have been observed from Ganymede’s atmosphere with the Hubble Space Telescope. Thus, the aurora at Ganymede is of particular interest in auroral research, which can advance the present day knowledge of both Ganymede and the aurora in general. Ganymede’s aurora is one of the topics to be studied by the Jupiter ICy moon Explorer (JUICE) mission that was launched in 2023, by the European Space Agency (ESA), and is now on its way to Jupiter and Ganymede.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics with Focus on Mercury’s Magnetosphere
Summary of PhD Program:
Mercury is a fundamentally unique object in the solar system. It possesses a weak global magnetic field of internal origin and in consequence, a small magnetosphere much smaller than the magnetosphere of Earth. Due to the proximity of Mercury to the Sun, the magnetosphere of Mercury is subject to the most intense solar wind flux and ferocious space weather among all the planets in the solar system. The purpose of the PhD project is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex interaction between the solar wind and Mercury during extreme solar events (e.g., Coronal Mass Ejections) using Amitis, a state-of-the-art hybrid-kinetic plasma model
Application Deadline: 2025-02-28
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in molecular and cellular communication between cancer and the nervous system
Summary of PhD Program:
During cancer progression tumors communicate with the nervous system resulting in worse cancer outcomes. While nervous system/tumor interactions are robustly documented at a histological level, the molecular mechanisms underling this, remain poorly understood. You will join an interdisciplinary collaborative team focusing on the signaling between the nervous system and tumors, leading to provocation of neural plasticity (such as growth and remodeling) and neurotropism of tumor cells (see lab web page). You will engage a systematic strategy to identify these mechanisms by examining how the nervous system forms, grows and is remodeled (i) normally during nervous system development and (ii) pathologically in tumor models leading to a more aggressive cancer, with an initial focus on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in ecological communities respond to climate-induced stress
Summary of PhD Program:
As climate change transforms the environment, it is also altering the distribution of plants and animals across the planet. These changes impact natural regions, or bioregions, where species coexist. To protect biodiversity, it is crucial to understand how these regions are formed and how they respond to environmental shifts. This involves uncovering the key mechanisms that define bioregion boundaries and predicting their responses to a changing climate.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics with focus on Space Physics
Summary of PhD Program:
The Earth is constantly losing parts of its atmosphere by its upper part being ionized and partially lost into space. To better understand this atmospheric escape, we must first get a better understanding of the plasma transport in Earth’s magnetotail. The ‘Magnetospheric Space Plasma Group’ at Umeå University is therefore looking for a brilliant PhD candidate interested in performing research on the transport of heavy ions (He+, He++, O+) in Earth’s magnetotail, using observed data from the ESA Cluster and the NASA MMS multi-spacecraft missions.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in plant science with a focus on small proteins
Summary of PhD Program:
This doctoral project focuses on exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying plant development, with particular emphasis on symmetry-breaking processes in flowers. Symmetry breaking is a fundamental biological phenomenon where symmetrical structures develop into complex, specialized forms. This process is crucial in multicellular organisms and plays a central role in shaping the diversity of plant and animal forms. The research combines experimental and computational approaches, leveraging advanced techniques such as genomics, proteomics, genome editing, and protein engineering. The project will focus on identifying and characterizing key molecular regulators, including microProteins, that control flower development.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Biology
Summary of PhD Program:
Integrity of the genome is critical to both the development and health of humans. Our chromosomes are constantly exposed to various types of DNA damage, which if unrepaired can cause diseases such as cancer. To meet these challenges, several DNA repair pathways have evolved. The Cohn laboratory is focused on understanding how these pathways work in human cells. We have discovered several new proteins playing important roles in these pathways. This PhD project has the goal to further elucidate the role of new components of the DNA repair pathways.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing Science with focus on Symbolic AI
Summary of PhD Program:
In modern software systems and the organizations that run them, a substantial part of day-to-day decisions with critical impact on individual humans and society at large is either fully automated or heavily relies on automatically provided decision support. While machine learning approaches become increasingly prevalent in this context, the cores of the systems’ reasoning engines typically remain ‘symbolic’ (knowledge-based). These symbolic or neuro-symbolic software systems are of high practical complexity, which makes them difficult to reason about, for example when assessing which meta-level changes lead to the intended real-world impact.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing Science with focus on Compilation of Linear Algebra Expressions
Summary of PhD Program:
Linear algebra expressions are evaluated in an efficient and robust way by mapping them to a carefully chosen sequence of calls to optimized functions as offered by libraries such as BLAS and LAPACK. The mapping is by no means unique, and different mappings differ in terms of time, space, and accuracy. When the sizes of the matrices are unknown at compile-time, as is often the case, then the problem is further complicated by the fact that no single mapping is optimal for all combinations of matrix sizes. As a consequence, any code generated (at compile-time) to evaluate the at run-time) must consist of more than just a single sequence of function calls.
