1. Fully Funded PhD Position in life-cycle assessment (LCA) of more sustainable agriculture and food systems
Summary of PhD Program:
We seek two candidates that are strongly motivated to study the interactions across space and time between climate change mitigation, sustainable land and resource management, and agricultural systems. The main objective is to improve existing methods of environmental sustainability analysis (mostly for climate change, nutrients, sustainable production and consumption) and apply them to case studies that are relevant for the transition to a more sustainable agricultural system. The candidates will perform both methodological and applied research, and will have the opportunity to attend a PhD program with access to the most up-to-date approaches in Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), interact with the major global experts in the field, and collaborate with national and international industries.
Application Deadline: 29th February 2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Dynamic Simulations for Thermo-chemical Plastic Recycling
Summary of PhD Program:
Plastic pollution is a significant concern and drives the development of new recycling technologies. Food packaging is a main contributor to plastic waste due to its short lifespan. These package materials often consist of multilayer polymer films and composites. Once discarded, multipolymer materials cannot be sorted into the homogeneity needed for classical plastic recycling and hence are, as of today, not recyclable on a large scale. High-temperature gasification is a promising method for recycling these mixed wastes. By subjecting the plastics to temperatures of 800°C, the organic structure of the plastic is broken down. The resulting product gas can be reacted into new mono- and polymers of the same quality as fossil-based plastics, a prerequisite for creating a circular plastic economy.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Remote Maritime Operations
Summary of PhD Program:
One example is new technology onboard ships that open up for new, and more direct, forms of onshore involvement in operations. This involvement will also include suppliers of technology and the clients / customers that are paying for the operation. Compared to operations that are run locally, remote operations demand new ways of performing, coordinating and controlling work. Such changes to the operations can affect the safety and the efficiency of the operations both positively and negatively, and further knowledge is needed to better understand and potentially improve the organization of operations.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Characterization of Fast Elongating Short Commutating Arcs in MVDC Circuit Breakers
Summary of PhD Program:
The use of fossil fuels and the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere must be minimized as fast as possible to reach a climate-neutral society by 2050. A vital prerequisite of the de-carbonization is the rapid growth of renewables. In 2050 more than 60 % of electrical power is expected to come from wind and solar, both significantly more remote located than traditional thermal power generation. To achieve this, efficient grid-integration of renewables across Europe and globally requires the development of high-power transmission systems and components, and more specifically Medium Voltage DC (MVDC) and High Voltage DC (HVDC) switchgear.
Application Deadline: 19th February 2024
11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Adaption of the Electric Energy System for Large-scale Hydrogen Production in Norway

The prospective candidate will be part of a project team that works in the research area “Integrating Activity (IA) – Enabling a sustainable hydrogen economy” and will also collaborate closely with related PhDs and researchers in other parts of the centre, and in particular within “Green H2 production”. The main question is how large-scale hydrogen production installations (e.g. electrolyser, fuel-cells, compressors, storage) will interact with the Norwegian energy system, both as a challenge (increased power/energy demand) and as a supporter (supplier of grid services).
Application Deadline: 19th February 2024
12. Fully Funded PhD Position in hydro-morphodynamical modelling
Summary of PhD Program:
This specific PhD project focuses on the hydro-morphodynamical modelling. Longshore sediment transport has a significant impact on the morphological changes of the coast. Such changes may lead to critical conditions for cross-shore sediment transport and contribute to soil instability and coastal protection failures. In order to account for the large-scale sediment transport under wave and current effects, a computationally efficient numerical model will be used. The simulated large-scale morphological evolution can be used to identify extreme sediment transport events and connected to the particle framework.
