4. Fully Funded PhD Position in developing physics-based loss models of advanced magnetic devices for future highly efficient drive and converter systems

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated individuals interested in pursuing a PhD in the multidisciplinary and important research area of modelling and optimisation of magnetic components and electric machines. Highly efficient as well as compact transformers and chokes are critical elements in most power electronic systems, because these components drastically influence the overall efficiency and power density of converters. Similarly, in electric drive systems the overall efficiency and power density are significantly affected by the iron and winding losses in the machine. In order to pace with the rapid development of semiconductors (e.g. wide bandgap SiC MOSFETs/GaN HEMTs), advanced concepts for magnetic devices and in particular comprehensive models of the core losses should be developed by you.

5. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Coupled Interior-Atmosphere Evolution of Venus and Rocky Exoplanets

Summary of PhD Program:

Two doctoral (PhD) positions within the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics group are available within the framework of a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) funded project “Coupled interior-atmosphere evolution of Venus and rocky exoplanets from magma ocean to the present day”. 8. Multiple Fully Funded PhD Position in Single Cell Proteome Profiling

Summary of PhD Program:

Genomics revolution occurred because of the invention of single-molecule sequencing technologies, and consequently it has profoundly improved precision medicine and diagnostics. Single-cell proteomics and secretomics is on its way to make a similar groundbreaking impact on our future understanding of cells and will significantly contribute to the development of drugs and cell-based therapies.

The main objective of the ERC funded project is to pioneer research direction of in situ cell profiling by identification of proteins, their abundance and temporal distribution at a single-cell level using nanopore sensors. The approach is the first of its type that can potentially address important biology questions at single-cell level and with a much higher temporal and spatial sensitivity compared to other existing methods.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in mycelium for faecal sludge degradation

Summary of PhD Program:

Recently, mycelium has been embraced as a low-cost, highly adaptable, degradable material for a variety of applications. However, in the context of sanitation, little work has addressed the possibilities of using mycelium as a treatment technology. By testing different strains, growing conditions, and product configurations, we aim to develop low-cost mycelium-based materials that can accelerate sludge degradation, extend the life of latrines, and/or reduce the need for offsite treatment. Unlike other GHE positions, this work will be primarily based in the laboratory at ETH Zurich with limited travel.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Cloud Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

Field measurements in atmospheric science often measure the state of a cloud but not the rates of cloud processes, which are crucial for refining parameterization in weather and climate models. To overcome this limitation, orographic wave clouds can serve as a natural laboratory for investigating microphysical cloud processes. Orographic wave clouds (lenticularis clouds) are clouds that form when air masses flow across hills and mountains in a statically stable atmosphere. The rising motion causes vapour to condense into cloud droplets, which may freeze if temperatures are sufficiently low. Conversely, during the downward motion, the cloud dissipates as cloud droplets evaporate and/or ice crystals sublimate.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in nonlinear optics for analog computing

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project aims to exploit the large number of modes supported by the random structure to enable large-scale nonlinear optical operators for photonic machine learning and quantum optics. The former relies on the second harmonic generation to implement a large reservoir of nonlinear operations, while the latter involves the theoretical and experimental characterization of the spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) process in nonlinear disordered media, and the subsequent control of the generated quantum states.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrohydraulic Actuators for Robotic Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The doctoral studies will focus on the co-optimization of the structure and control of low voltage electrohydraulic actuators, which is an integrated process that starts from material selection and design choice suitable for mass fabrication and ends with the proper control policies. Materials dictate the fundamental physics within the actuators, and design determines actuation principles, which are crucial in efficiency, force, and speed improvements. Accurate and consistent fabrication of soft actuators is a must for future product developments. The ability to accurately control the actuators is key to a wide range of applications and can be acquired with help from the self-sensing capability of the actuators. The actuators will also be integrated into robotic systems as functional demonstrators that can operate in real-world environments.

18. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Real structure of materials with local lattice instabilities

Summary of PhD Program:

The current project will focus on crystals in which disorder is driven by electron instabilities. These are chemically perfect crystals in which electrons have degenerate configurations and, as a result, occupy different states in different unit cells. Such structures show unusual physics, such as colossal magnetoresistance, and other forms of polaronic transport phenomena. In this project, you will develop novel approaches to experimentally probe such hidden states based on single crystal diffuse scattering, model them using coarse-graining of DFT calculations, and understand the influence of electronic disorder on their properties like colossal magnetoresistance or, in perspective, unconventional superconductivity.
