1. Fully Funded PhD Position in GaN-based Power Electronics for Reliable Next-Generation Actuation Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

Within this project, we are looking for a talented power electronics PhD-candidate. Your main goal will be to research and develop gallium-nitride (GaN) based power electronics that cause low transient electric fields, in order to mitigate partial-discharge induced failures in linear actuators. Such linear actuators are used in high-tech motion systems, for example to allow nanometer-accurate positioning in lithography machines. However, increasing requirements on actuator acceleration and precision lead to higher mechanical, electromagnetic and thermal stresses as well as non-recoverable failures. Actuator reliability therefore has become a major concern, but failure mechanisms are currently poorly understood.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in InP photonic devices and circuits directly grown on Si

Summary of PhD Program:

Photonics is widely regarded as the key enabling technology of the 21st century and its application and use in many scientific and industrial fields is accelerated through Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), which combine many optical components into a miniaturized chip format. Similar to electronic ICs, PICs are revolutionizing areas such as healthcare, communication and sensing and have the potential to be disruptive to the whole society. While InP technology promises highest efficiency and speed, its scalability is constrained by its native substrate size (industrial mainstream 4 inch). A promising research direction in this field is to explore the method to scale up towards the Si substrate sizes (200-300mm), using direct growth of InP epitaxial layers on Si.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Algorithms for complex networks

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD-TA candidate, you will work on new distributed algorithms for large networks, in particular, computing the stationary distribution of random walks and policy evaluation. Random walks are used in network analysis for ranking vertices, community detection, and embedding of the vertices in multi-dimensional space for machine learning tasks. Policy evaluation is widely used in reinforcement learning, for instance, for training large language models. Your challenge is to develop, analyze and implement algorithms where the network vertices act independently by learning from their local observations. You will mathematically analyze the algorithms on random graph models and implement them on large real-life networks.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in plasma-driven CO2 upgrading – 1a. Pulsed power design

Summary of PhD Program:

Using sustainable energy, back-conversion of CO2 to organic materials is a very interesting, but highly challenging concept. The aim is not to regenerate fuels but synthesize essential building blocks for specialty organics like e.g. pharmaceutics, vitamins and advanced polymeric materials. Plasma technology, especially our fast pulse power plasma concept, could provide pathways of lower activation energy than conventional thermal activation. By choosing the right combination of plasma parameters, feedstock recipes and reactor topology, plasma-driven hydrocarbon synthesis from CO2 may be a very attractive, near future concept to secure the availability of advanced organic materials without dependence on fossil sources. The focus of this PhD project will be on the pulsed power development for this process.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Revenue Management for Complex Stochastic Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

Today, many companies in various industries need to manage highly complex stochastic systems where uncertainties are inherent and data is ubiquitous. These systems span various domains, from manufacturing equipment, to rental systems, to production systems and beyond. In such environments, decisions must be made repeatedly to maximize profits while balancing conflicting outcomes and exploiting real-time data. For instance, in manufacturing operations, decisions regarding production speeds directly impact production outputs on the one hand, and factors such as equipment deterioration and energy consumption on the other hand. Similarly, in rental systems, optimizing pricing strategies to match real-time demand with supply is crucial for revenue maximization.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrical Energy Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of the RESONATE project is to investigate how the network can be operated in real-time and adaptive to minimize the required safety margins and use the available network capacity as efficiently as possible. The project will define prerequisites for the implementation of real-time system operations and develop an appropriate system architecture for TSO and DSO. Real-time system operations uses available network capacity more efficiently than is possible in the present paradigm. 17. Fully Funded PhD Position in permanent-magnet-free electrical drives for heavy-duty applications

Summary of PhD Program:

In contrast to conventional internal combustion engines, electric traction vehicles offer a more environmentally friendly solution for mitigating global warming. Due to their high power density, permanent-magnet-based electrical machines are commonly used in electric vehicles. However, these machines have several disadvantages, such as the high cost of the permanent-magnet (PM) material and decreased performance at higher temperatures. Specifically, the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles, such as agricultural tractors, requires a large amount of rare-earth material to satisfy the high-torque demand. One of the strong candidates for PM-free high-torque electrical drive is the variable flux reluctance machine (VFRM) because of its robust and cost-effective structure.
