1. Fully Funded PhD Position in focus on Accelerating Rarefied Gas Dynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project you will break ground on the way rarefied flows are modeled for emerging technologies, by developing innovative approaches that blend data-driven (machine learning) and model-driven (physics-based) methodologies. In this way, you will contribute incorporating the accuracy of computationally expensive atomistic models into macroscopic approaches, while simultaneously severely cutting back the computational cost.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in digital twins for modelling and forecasting induced seismicity

Summary of PhD Program:

You will build on some preparatory works [1-6], showing as a proof-of-concept that a soft-glass, forced below yield stress, follows stick-slip dynamics and closely mimics the empirical laws observed for tectonic seismicity (Gutenberg-Richter law, Omori’s law, interevent time distribution). The model needs to be tuned to a specific field situation where induced seismicity is occurring. This is the central part of this project. Once tuned, the digital twin will replicate what is happening in the field. Further, once tuned, different fluid migration scenarios can be tested to explore, for example, which protocols may produce induced seismicity with the steepest possible Gutenberg-Richter slope.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Design, manufacturing and testing of liquid metal heat shielding concepts

Summary of PhD Program:

A key aspect to enable nuclear fusion as a cost-effective and reliable energy source is how to mitigate the heat load on the reactor wall and ensure its lifetime. A potential solution are liquid metal heat shields, where a liquid metal is captured in a capillary solid skeleton. High purity tungsten will be used as the structural skeleton material in liquid metal divertor components. The concept of additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, offers the geometrical flexibility required for these intrinsically complex components. Specifically, the laser powder bed fusion process offers a high geometrical accuracy for the required internal features.

Fully Funded PhD Position in hydrogen plasma-based reduction of iron oxide

Summary of PhD Program:

Steel production requires the reduction of iron ore (iron oxide) to metallic iron. This process is traditionally performed at high temperatures and with carbon as the reduction agent, forming CO2 as the byproduct. Since steel production is responsible for about 7% of yearly anthropogenic CO2 emission, hydrogen is currently being evaluated as an alternative reduction agent. There are hints that hydrogen plasmas can drive the reaction at lower temperatures, leading to a recent renewed interest in this topic and several new experiments being setup around the world. However, these experiments are focused on application-oriented designs that do not allow for the measurements of plasma species

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Symmetric Cryptography over Prime Fields and Integer Rings

Summary of PhD Program:

At the current state of the art, the approach of designing symmetric primitives that naturally operate over bits is showing all its limit when those symmetric primitives are used in new emerging contexts, such as rising applications of practical importance including Format Preserving Encryption (FPE), Multi-Party Computation (MPC), Homomorphic Encryption (HE), and Zero-Knowledge (ZK). These applications are usually defined over prime finite fields, and more recently, even over integer rings. In order to work, such protocols and applications rely on the evaluation of symmetric cryptographic primitives (as ciphers and hash functions), whose details have a crucial impact on the performances of the considered application/protocol.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in reuse of steel bridge members with fatigue damage

Summary of PhD Program:

Are you eager to work on the reuse of steel bridge elements which experienced fatigue damage during their service time? In a world with finite resources and limited and slow natural renewal, we must preserve and conserve what is already there. Nevertheless, growth and the desire for creating something new continue to shape human activity and facilitate the preservation or even the desired expansion of the quality of life. This project aims at reusing components from existing steel and steel-concrete composite bridges as components in new bridge and building structures, thereby contributing to a fully circular economy.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in computational illumination optics

Summary of PhD Program:

For ideal sources (point source or parallel beam of light rays) and light rays that follow a single path from light source to target screen, we know how to compute the required freeform optical surfaces (lenses or reflectors). This is done by numerically solving a nonlinear partial differential equation of Monge-Ampère type. In this project we will develop algorithms to design optical systems where light beams can be split and rays may follow different paths. This is important for applications as it may lead to more compact designs.
