1. Postdoctoral PositionĀ

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The successful candidate will contribute to the formal security specification and design of cryptographic protocols in the Open Finance area. In Open Finance we envision multiple entities, each holding private data, that want to perform joint computation over this data to offer to customers the best possible financial products. The main goal of the project is to investigate what are the security requirements for Open Finance, and then provide a formal security specification (e.g., in the Universal Composable framework) of such a system. The successful candidate will then work on designing a protocol that matches this security definition, and in the final stage of the project, will implement part of the system, focusing on a specific use case. The candidate will be supported by members of the Business School to successfully complete the first phase of the project related to understanding the basic security requirements of an Open Finance system.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Neural architecture search (NAS) algorithms aim to automate neural network architecture design, given a task. However, they are typically expensive, only search across narrow spaces of architectures, and are lacking in robustness. For these reasons (and others), manually designed architectures still dominate machine learning. As part of the UPNAS project, the successful applicant will develop efficient NAS algorithms, explore how to generate diverse search spaces, and investigate the robustness and failure modes of NAS algorithms to make NAS a tool that can be used cheaply and reliably by a wide range of practitioners for new tasks.

15. Postdoctoral PositionĀ

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

This exciting new research project in collaboration with the universities of Durham, Birmingham and Northumbria is aiming at combining Artificial Intelligence (AI) with smart grids and virtual power plants, with a scope to improve decision-making for network operators, specifically aiming on enhancing the grid resilience to natural hazards and extreme climate events. To achieve this, we will develop innovative AI-based approaches on modelling, forecasting and managing the stochastic and spatially dispersed renewable and other Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) such as batteries, electric vehicles, smart loads etc. This will lead to reduced energy bills for millions of UK energy consumers, fewer power cuts during extreme events, as well as greater adoption and more efficient management of DERs, enabling a rapid progress towards Net-Zero.

18. Postdoctoral PositionĀ

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The dynamical systems view of turbulence, in which the flow ā€œpinballsā€ between exact coherent states (ECS), is a promising way to unify our statistical understanding of turbulence with a mechanistic understanding of the complex self-sustaining processes that underpin it. Historically, this approach has been restricted to weakly turbulent flows due to the difficulty of identifying and converging ECS, and this project will seek to use advances in machine learning and automatic differentiation to overcome these barriers.
