1. Fully Funded PhD Position in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to design and construct a compact monochromator that sits largely within the analysis chamber, lowering cost and simplifying the instrumentation for small-spot XPS analysis. This new monochromator will require novel approaches to design and materials compared to existing systems. The project will involve deployment of the monochromator crystal in a novel way and identification of a material with more favourable diffraction characteristics than quartz. This could include micro-mechanical modification of the crystal allowing it to bend to the correct angle or superposition of small individual crystals in a novel arrangement. Alternative technological approaches will also be explored.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in XPS for energy materials

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will achieve a paradigm shift in which peak fitting for the extraction of chemical states can be achieved. Standard, well characterised, transition metal compounds will be employed to provide high-quality XPS data recorded at high spectral resolution. The meat of the project will be the development of AI-based procedures such as machine learning (ML) to carry out unsupervised fitting of mixed valence state spectra using the spectra from the standard compounds. These will be used to “teach” the ML routine the characteristics of each oxidation state thus enabling the precise speciation of the “unknown” compounds.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in 3D mass spectrometry imaging

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to understand the physics behind the phenomena that separates molecules by structure and leverage these to develop innovative methods to study molecules at the micro and nanoscale. Reference metal materials will be used for fundamental studies and structural isomers organic molecules will be used for the development of analytical methods. The fundamental studies will be aided by computer simulation of ion paths. The project will make use of two SIMS systems, the standard ToF-SIMS at Surrey and the OrbiSIMS at NPL. The geographical proximity of the two sites will enable ready travel between the two.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in natural language processing for medical imaging

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to develop novel uncertainty methodologies and a software toolkit with uncertainty awareness for radiograph-based disease detection. The proposed models are expected to differentiate themselves with the uncertainty quantification algorithms to address data annotation. This will be achieved through three concrete and actionable research tasks in the duration of the studentship: 1) data uncertainty (from images, texts) integration for medical imaging; 2) model uncertainty quantification; and 3) clinician-in-the-loop AI (incorporating knowledge into the AI). Thus, in identified high uncertainty cases, human validation, intervention, and more extensive tests can be carried out to avoid potential error.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Trustworthy AI for socially compliant autonomous driving

Summary of PhD Program:

Driving is highly dynamic within varied environments and for an autonomous vehicle (AV) to perform reasonably and safely, many variables need to be considered which go well beyond simple rules. As a result, there are concerns about AV behaviour in complex and uncertain driving situations where there is a need to navigate the roadways and balance factors such as safety, legality, ethics, comfort, etc., in the same way functionally as a responsible human driver.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in arboviruses

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD focusses on two neglected arboviruses: Tembusu (TMUV) and Wesselsbron (WSLV), both cause serious diseases in livestock, are zoonotic and have similar transmission cycles to other arboviruses such as West Nile virus which is currently spreading across Europe infecting both horses and people. Currently these viruses have not been detected in Europe, but they have been identified as the next potential threat, as wildlife viruses of veterinary and zoonotic importance, prompting the joint funding of this PhD studentship. During the PhD you will develop new rapid molecular detection tests, and use whole genome sequencing to characterise the viruses, including analysis of adaptation during passage in cells and mosquitoes.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in animal movement technology

Summary of PhD Program:

The single disease with the largest impact globally on agriculture is Foot and Mouth Disease. Not only does this disease prevent countries from breaking out of the poverty gap, but also new outbreaks can cause devastation to the agriculture industry and supporting functions, as has previously been seen in the UK during 2001. There is a clear gap in disease surveillance globally, allowing the disease to go unchecked in many countries, and presenting a real and constant threat to the UK. Animal monitoring technology is well-established for identification, reproduction, health and productivity. There is currently an unmet market opportunity to use this novel technology, particularly animal tracking and tracing technology to improve disease control.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in transmission of pestiviruses

Summary of PhD Program:

The Pestiviruses, including Bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), Border disease virus (BDV) and Classical swine Fever virus (CSFV), are among the economically most important pathogens of livestock. The biology of these viruses shows significant similarity to the biology of Yellow Fever virus within the family Flaviviridae. Several newly emerged pestivirus species were introduced into cattle and pigs as well as wild ruminant populations during the last decades. Emerging pestivirus diseases frequently challenge prevention and control strategies in the swine and cattle industry.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in time history analysis

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to optimise the current design of offshore wind turbine foundations through advanced time history analysis of monopile and gravity-based foundations under extreme loading conditions. The focus will be on the conservative assumptions made regarding the energy dissipation capacity of the ground to mitigate the dynamic response induced by wind and waves. The study will seek to verify these assumptions and simplify the complexity of the associated computations and calculations. The outcomes of this research could potentially lead to more efficient designs, further reducing the LCOE and enhancing the competitiveness of offshore wind energy.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in chemical degradation and formulation stability

Summary of PhD Program:

Certain accelerated ageing test regimes study the chemical ageing of a network by thermo-oxidative degradation. It is known that a combination of polymer scission and / or cross-linking occurs to alter the state of the polymeric network (in addition to chemical modification). It is generally assumed that elastomeric materials stiffen (due to loss of viscous character) and thus the rate of stress relaxation diminishes however, this is not measured. It is therefore advantageous to understand how chemical degradation also directly affects the viscous relaxation process.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in vaccine development against infections by Escherichia coli

Summary of PhD Program:

A 3.5-year, fully-funded PhD studentship, including international fee, is offered to explore the use of cutting-edge technologies and novel vaccine platforms for the development of vaccines against E. coli. Infections caused by E. coli in humans and animals result in significant morbidity and mortality. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance is making infections more difficult to treat. The high variability of isolates, virulence factors and pathogenic presentations of infections by E. coli poses a significant challenge for the development of cost-effective vaccines. In this project, the student will leverage recent technologies and synergies between the veterinary and human vaccinology fields to identify relevant antigen targets, create tools to support vaccine development and ultimately create and evaluate novel vaccine candidates against E. coli infections.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in tick-borne flavivirus

Summary of PhD Program:

While viral persistence of tick-borne viruses is recognized ecologically, little is known on how tick-borne arboviruses establish viral persistence at the cellular level. Elucidating the determinants essential for initiating and maintaining viral persistence is key for developing vector control strategies and limiting viral transmission. Therefore, the project proposes to develop a novel study system using Ixodes Ricinus cells infected with the tick-borne Flavivirus, Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), to identify and characterize host factors essential for the viral persistence within vector cells.
