11. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct statistical modeling of impacts of extreme climate events on agriculture in relation to different farming systems. In particular, this postdoc will lead analyses to assess how diversified cropping systems affect crop production during the types of stressful weather that will continue to become more frequent and more severe with climate change. This will include processing existing datasets spanning approximately one million fields across nine states and two decades in the U.S. Corn Belt, including crop yields, remotely sensed data on crop rotation and cover cropping, and environmental variables. The postdoc will then develop statistical models of crop yield risks in a Bayesian causal inference framework. This position would be ideal for either an environmental science PhD with strong statistical training or a statistics PhD with experience or interest in environmental applications.

14. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The lab of Dr. Spencer Diamond at UC Berkeley’s Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is recruiting postdoctoral scholars to join a highly collaborative team of researchers, including Prof. Jennifer Doudna and Prof. Jillian Banfield, who are tightly integrated within IGI’s Berkeley Initiative for Optimized Microbiome Editing (BIOME). Projects will focus on characterizing model microbiomes using genome-resolved multi-Omics methods, statistical/metabolic modeling, and machine learning. The postdoc will apply these approaches to generate a systems level understanding of microbiomes including the importance of individual microbial species, microbe-microbe interactions, plasmids, and phages in the behavior of a whole microbiome.

These efforts will be closely integrated with those of a multidisciplinary team from UC Berkeley, UCSF, and UC Davis to design strategies to alter microbiome behavior through targeted genetic editing. Specific projects are flexible but could range from modeling microbiome influences that contribute to inflammatory process in the human gut to characterizing the mobilome of livestock rumen. This work is supported by a long term fully funded grant program, will allow significant flexibility in project design, and is supported by IGI core resources such as large sequencing allowances and a comprehensive in-house computational infrastructure.
