7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Unravelling the protection against oxidation in emulsions provided by constituents of plant protein ingredients

Summary of PhD Program:

Stability and long shelf life of food products are key determinants of their quality and are essential in minimising food waste. Protein isolates or concentrates from legumes (e.g. soy, pea, faba bean) are used as plant-derived ingredients for physical stabilization of emulsions. Interestingly, these plant protein ingredients also contribute to chemical stabilization of emulsions, by inhibiting lipid oxidation and thereby preventing rancidity. However, the compounds and mechanisms responsible for this protective effect are yet unknown.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microplastic-sediment aggregation

Summary of PhD Program:

Microplastics (plastic particles < 5mm), pose social, environmental and economic threats in the aquatic environment. While their toxicity has been the focus of interest for a long time, first voices have been raised concerning their impact on large-scale environmental processes such as sediment transport. Microplastic-sediment aggregation appears to enhance sedimentation of both microplastics and sediments, which might alter sediment transport along rivers and thus influence fluvial ecosystems as well as the navigability of our waterways.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Modelling tip burn in lettuce

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, your focus will be on developing a simulation model capable of predicting crop growth and the spatial distribution of transpiration and calcium concentration within the leaves. This task presents a unique scientific challenge. You’ll also explore various scenarios to better understand how different environmental factors, such as local air flow, leaf temperature, humidity, and light, influence calcium transport and, consequently, tip burn. In this PhD position, you will collaborate with researchers who conduct experiments and quantify the physiological aspects of tip burn.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Discovering enabling conditions for nature-inclusive agriculture in Dutch living labs

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of this PhD project is to create insight in social and institutional options and leverages that may help to overcome constraints to strip cropping, and to explore novel methods through which the contribution of novel policy options, incentive systems and organizational solutions can be tested in the living labs.
