6. Fully Funded PhD Position in life prediction of nickel-based alloys under hydrogen environment

Summary of PhD Program:

Nickel-based alloys are extensively used in the oil and gas industry owing to their excellent mechanical properties under harsh environment. Nevertheless, multiple field failures have been reported over the last years, indicating hydrogen-assisted cracking/hydrogen embrittlement (HE) caused by the presence of hydrogen in the environment. Alarmed by this “time bomb” scenario, the oil and gas industry in Norway is attempting to establish a practical guideline related to HE in nickel-based alloys. To meet the urgent industrial needs, microstructure-informed hydrogen embrittlement life prediction of nickel-based alloys (Helife) project, funded by the Research Council of Norway, aims to provide the scientific basis for establishing a practical guideline for HE assessment of both the existing components made of precipitation-hardened nickel alloys and the promising strain-hardened alloys for the subsea applications.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Area of Edge Intelligence Design and Optimization

Summary of PhD Program:

At the Department of Computer Science (IDI), we have a vacancy for Ph.D. candidate in edge intelligence. This PhD project will work at the intersection of edge computing and artificial intelligence (AI). Edge systems are gradually becoming a major platform to implement advanced AI applications. However, edge systems, like mobile phones, are usually subject to limited resources and battery supply. On the other hand, deep learning models are becoming more complicated with more parameters. Thus, there exists a computational gap between resource-limited edge systems and complicated deep learning models.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Corrosion protection of floating structures using laser welding technology

Summary of PhD Program:

Statens Vegvesen (Norwegian Road Authority – SVV)/Ferry free E39 need to develop new technology solutions for bridge constructions in marine environment. New floating bridge concepts require corrosion protection of steel structures in the splash zone in addition to protection of steel surfaces exposed to air in pontoons and bridge boxes. The regulations used today, require that all bridges and load bearing constructions shall be designed with a 100-year lifetime. This does not include the corrosion protection system. However, to make a design that includes frequent maintenance of the corrosion protection system of these big floating bridges will be complicated and costly. Today structures exposed to seawater are protected by a combination of organic coating and cathodic protection (sacrificial anodes of impressed current system), while surfaces exposed to marine atmosphere is protected by a coating system (organic- and/or a metallic coating). These protection systems will require maintenance during a 100-year lifetime.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Acoustic methods for prediction of geological conditions while drilling

Summary of PhD Program:

Acoustics-based methods are very important for safe and efficient drilling of wells for oil and gas production as well as CO2 storage. Wells, with diameter varying between 12 cm and 1 meter and length of several kilometers, extend through various geological features which can affect safety and efficiency of the drilling process. Hard stringer – a relatively thin layer of hard rock – is one of such features. It is important to predict hard stringers (and other features) at a distance ahead of the drilled well. Since drilling emits significant acoustic energy into the rock ahead and around the well, it is, in principle, possible to detect these geological features with acoustic methods. However, very complex, uncertain and noisy environment at the well makes this task very challenging. A previous research project conducted at NTNU indicated the possibility of solving this challenge by employing a specific type of machine learning. This methodology needs to be further developed for hard stringers and tested in experiments.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Structural Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

NTNU Ålesund is currently focusing on asset management and resilience of critical transport infrastructure. Resilience can be defined as the ability to anticipate, prepare for, adapt to changing conditions, and withstand, respond to, and recover rapidly from disruptions. The expected increase in the frequency of extreme hazards together with aging infrastructure and following it structural deterioration are two main concerns threatening the resilience of existing coastal infrastructure that consists of multiple bridges, roads and ferry quays that play a crucial role in Norway’s economy and society. This in turn put strains on infrastructure owners that need to prioritize which assets needs retrofit and repair the most.
