Summary of PhD Program:

Social cognition disorders, such as anxiety and autism spectrum disorders, can have a serious impact on an individual’s quality of life. However, the brain circuits underlying these disorders are still poorly understood, which has limited the development of effective treatments. Therefore, a robust preclinical model is needed to assess social and cognitive behavioural characteristics of individual animals, and to quantitatively assess phenotypic traits associate with social cognitive disorder that will enables us to target specific brain circuits to advance treatment options in selected animals.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mechanical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

There is increasing interest in hydrogen as a viable carbon-free alternative for power and propulsion. Hydrogen behaves significantly differently from conventional hydrocarbons; in particular, it burns an order-of-magnitude faster. To control flame speeds and temperatures, hydrogen can be burned lean (with an excess of oxygen), but this can lead to flame instabilities due to the high diffusivity of the fuel (known as the thermodiffusive instability). The instability can make the flame difficult to control, as well as increase NOx emissions. The thermodiffusive instability is not well understood, and there is a complex dependence on reactant conditions (pressure, temperature and equivalence ratio).

Summary of PhD Program:

One of the processes that challenge this assumption is related to crustal deformation due to fluctuations in terrestrial water storage. The seasonal exchange of water between the continents and the oceans generates changes in surface loading that causes elastic deformation of the Earth’s surface. This project will focus on using GNSS observations to characterize crustal deformation caused by the redistribution of water mass across a broad range of timescales, and assess how this affects our ability to estimate meaningful secular velocities of the Earth’s crust. This will also improve our understanding of the broad-scale continental hydrological signals.

Although many studies on cocrystal design are found in the literature, cocrystal formulation development has thus far been marked by a lack of understanding of cocrystal solution chemistry that governs drug supersaturation. The selection of additives remains a largely empirical and time-consuming process. The expected outcome of this research is a conceptual framework for designing cocrystal formulations where a target in vitro drug concentration can be achieved through the rational use of thermodynamic properties and predictions, in combination with drug precipitation kinetics and oral absorption properties.

We are seeking candidates to develop hardware-assisted mechanisms for securing Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Relevant directions include:

  • Enhancing CPU designs, e.g. RISC-V, to support instruction-level encryption and authentication.
  • Methods for file-based and full-disk encryption, and establishing trust in constrained devices.
  • Building ‘encryption by default’ into general and real-time operating systems (RTOSs), e.g. Linux and Zephyr.

Summary of PhD Program:

In Bayesian inference, the posterior distributions often exhibit a multi-modal characteristic. It is a challenging problem to draw random realisations from such multimodal posteriors via traditional Monte Carlo methods, such as Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) which could get stuck in a local mode of the posterior. To tackle this challenge, methods based on ‘mode jumping’ or ‘space augmentation’ have been proposed in the literature.  The aim of this project is to develop a novel sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) method, based on space augmentation of continuous Markov chains.  Convergence properties of the new SMC method will be studied as well.

Summary of PhD Program:

A funded 4-year PhD position at Newcastle University on massive star asteroseismology is available through the UKRI Frontier Research Grant SYMPHONY [EP/Y031059/1]. Asteroseismology is the study of stellar pulsations, which telescopes capture as changes in surface brightness and provide constraints on the physics of stellar structure and evolution. The SYMPHONY project targets massive stars that eventually explode as supernovae and leave behind a neutron star or black hole. Forward asteroseismic modelling of a massive star’s pulsations reveals its interior rotation profile, (core) mass and age, which are currently not well known. The successful PhD candidate will utilise data from the NASA TESS mission and combine them with spectroscopy to constrain the physical interiors of single and binary massive stars using asteroseismology.

Summary of PhD Program:

The cellular response to hypoxia (low oxygen) is critical to life and is primarily coordinated by a family of transcription factors known as Hypoxia Inducible Factors (HIFs). Hypoxia and HIF activation are prominent features in many diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration, making the targeting of the HIF pathway therapeutically attractive. Although the activation of HIF in hypoxia is well characterised, a significant unanswered question is how HIF transcriptional specificity is controlled at the chromatin level. One mechanism could be through the HIF-dependent recruitment of specific chromatin remodelers.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in plant viruses and vectors

Summary of PhD Program:

Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) Minion has been used for sequencing from PCR amplicons, giving a rapid sequence based confirmation of the presence of high risk pathogens such as COVID and Ebola, but it’s application in plant health has been limited. The studentship would investigate applications of this technology both in the labs at Fera and for deployment with inspectors. The aims of the studentship would be to: (1) Investigate the detection of whole genomes and their use as a proxy indication of pathogen viability, using a tiled amplicon sequencing approach for the detection and identification of tomato brown rugose fruit virus, including comparing the results for biologically viable and non-viable virus. (2) The simultaneous detection and sequence confirmation of suites of pathogens and pests, using multiplexed amplicon sequencing approach for the detection of viruses in soft fruits.

Furthermore, they can inform where future research would be best undertaken to reduce decision uncertainty through a value of information analysis. The adaptive design of trials is a methodology aimed at improving the efficiency and increasing patient benefit from controlled trials. Traditional evidence generation via controlled trials is an expensive and lengthy business and HTA bodies such as NICE are developing frameworks for the incorporation of real-world data into decision-making. The use of synthetic data and/or real-world data in combination with early economic modelling to develop a framework for informing adaptive trial design may offer a more efficient way of conducting research.

Summary of PhD Program:

CHF is a complex clinical syndrome which leads to reduced cardiac output at rest and/or in response to stress. The hallmark symptom of CHF is severe exercise intolerance, which is an integral contributor to impaired quality of life. While the aetiology of exercise intolerance is incompletely understood, impairments along multiple steps of the oxygen transport and utilisation pathway are known to be implicated in lower physical capacity in CHF. One potential contributor to exercise intolerance which has received little attention is neuromuscular fatigability, defined as the reduction in neuromuscular function occurring in response to exercise.
