6. Fully Funded PhD Position in ParaFit 2032 – Optimising Performance and Health in Para athletes: Travel, sleep and fatigue optimal management for long-haul performance

Summary of PhD Program:

With the next Paralympic Games taking place in Los Angeles, followed by Brisbane in 2032, long-haul, transpacific and trans-continental travel is inevitable for athletes participating in the Paralympic Games. Travel fatigue often occurs with long-haul flights, while jet lag is common among travellers crossing multiple time zones. The symptoms of both conditions are varied, intricate, and frequently hard to distinguish, yet each can have profound effects on physical and mental performance. Furthermore, Para athletes are likely to experience greater logistical and physiological challenges as a result of impairment when travelling compared to their able-bodied counterparts.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Para Athlete Physiological Responses to Heat Stress

Summary of PhD Program:

This project is part of the prestigious Loughborough University Vice Chancellor’s PhD Cluster – ParaFit 2032. ParaFit 2032 will advance Para athlete health and performance by exploring the complex interactions between performance, well-being, gender, and equipment ergonomics. While extensive research exists for non-disabled athletes, significant knowledge gaps remain in understanding impairment-specific factors affecting training, injury prevention, and recovery. This research will deliver a lasting impact on Brisbane 2032 and help shape the future of Para-sport science and practice.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microstructural Analysis and Evolution of Waste-to-Energy Grate Bars

Summary of PhD Program:

Within energy from waste (EfW) plant, non-recyclable waste is combusted to extract useable heat to create electricity. This process has two major benefits: 1, electricity is generated from a source of fuel which would otherwise be considered as waste and 2, the waste is diverted away from land fill. This process generates high temperatures within environments which contain gases derived from the burning fuel which has variable compositions. This combustion is contained within the furnace of EfW plant which consists of a series of moving grates made up of many grate bars across the furnace floor.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Innovating ParaSport: The Role of the Athlete-Equipment-Playing Environment Interface

Summary of PhD Program:

The research will adopt an individualised sport approach, targeting up to three Para sports (e.g., wheelchair tennis and rugby), and examining athlete anthropometrics, interfaces that impact performance and considering sports classification. By focusing on the integration of the athlete with their equipment and minimising environmental influences on performance, this work seeks to advance both physical and functional capacities. A multidisciplinary methodology, combining sport science, engineering, and biomechanics, will underpin the project to meet the unique demands of each athlete.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Impact of chemical elements from end-of-life aluminium scrap, and minor element additions to corrosion performance of 6XXX series aluminium alloys

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD research project is an EPRSC Industrial Cooperative Awards in Science and Engineering (ICASE) with Constellium, a global leader in the development, manufacturing, and recycling of aluminium products and solutions. Constellium aims to produce sustainable aluminium alloys supporting the reduction of embodied CO2. The energy needed to recycle aluminium is significantly lower than that required to produce primary aluminium. Therefore, using as much end-of-life (EoL) scrap as possible to formulate Constellium’s portfolio alloy is an effective way to help to achieve the target of more sustainable alloys.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development and validation of a bespoke sweat sensor to monitor nuanced changes in sweat rate

Summary of PhD Program:

At present, it is not possible to measure sweating over an extended period of time through a wearable system. Moreover, it is not yet clearly understood how sweating is linked to emotional responses, and how sweat glands respond to different lifestyles, in particular sedentary. Objective of this project, in collaboration with Unilever, is to design, build and validate a wearable, flexible biosensor to be used across body, with the ability to distinguish between apocrine and eccrine gland activation, to create a link to monitor the emotional response to triggers, and to build a stronger link to onset of sweating.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Comfort, Fit and Function: The Role of Sports Apparel and Equipment in Female Para-athlete Performance

Summary of PhD Program:

Sports apparel and equipment are critical determinants of an athlete’s performance and overall experience. Despite this, research focused on female para-athletes, particularly regarding apparel and equipment design, remains limited. Female para-athletes face distinct challenges, including limited clothing options, poor fit, and discomfort, which can impede athletic performance. Apparel specifically engineered to meet their needs has the potential to mitigate these issues by reducing physical strain, improve comfort, and support mobility during prolonged training or competition.
