1. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Becker group is a young and dynamic team that investigates the role of genetic modifications in DNA and RNA. Genetic modifications modulate gene expression by fine-tuning transcription, RNA processing and protein synthesis, thereby establishing multiple regulatory layers. So far, however, the exact biological role of most DNA/RNA modifications is largely elusive. Therefore, we are investigating the distribution, dynamics and interdependencies between different epigenetic or epitransciptional modifications to uncover their functional implications. For this, we use cutting-edge methodologies likes next generation sequencing as well as mass spectrometry to analyse nucleic acids and their modifications.

We are looking for researchers with scientific interests, qualification and skills matching these aims. We particularly invite applications from candidates with experience in the study of the ISM of dwarf/low metallicity galaxies, ISM modeling, the halo/CGM/ISM connection, and the environmental dependence of star formation, but other areas of research falling under the general theme of the department will be considered. The successful candidates will be expected to conduct a dynamic research programme targeting these core scientific objectives, in collaboration with Prof. Saintonge and other members of the group. The International Max Planck Research School for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IMPRS) also offers the opportunity for joint research with PhD students and their supervision.

4. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The project aims to elucidate the origins and function of a social organ of ants, the postpharyngeal gland. This head gland plays a key role in nestmate discrimination by mixing and exchanging cuticular hydrocarbons between members of a colony. Additional roles in the social exchange of nutrients and other molecules have been suggested, but not confirmed. The gland is also the specific target of parasitic nematodes, with effects of infections on behavior. The project will develop based on your interests and skills to include diverse approaches (e.g., comparative, behavioural, and/or chemical analyses, metabolomics, transcriptomics), capitalizing on the clonal raider ant as an experimental system.

5. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Research Group “Genetics of Behavior” is conducting research on the evolution of behavioural diversity and the genetic, molecular and neuronal changes driving these events. To do this we concentrate on the evolution of predation and kin-recognition behaviors found in the roundworm species Pristionchus pacificus and compare this to the microbial feeding species Caenorhaditis elegans.

7. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The research group aims to understand how biological organisms organize soft and fluid-like material. They currently focus on the organization principles of liquid droplets in biological cells, but they are also interested in broader questions in biological physics. They generally combine analytical insight from simple systems with more detailed numerical simulations to unveil biological design principles. Additionally, they build tailored models to interpret experimental data of collaborators.

8. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

This position offers a unique opportunity to explore the intriguing properties of ‘misfit’-layered compounds. While most crystalline solids exhibit three-dimensional periodic arrangements, misfit-layered compounds (MCLs) show physical properties that are largely 2D-like due to weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions along one direction. In this sense, MCLs are vdW heterostructures, displaying properties similar to those typically only observed in artificially-stacked and twisted heterostructures. The primary goal of this project is to investigate the fundamental physical properties of monolayers and multilayers of various MCLs in the form of nanodevices, examining their responses to external perturbations such as magnetic and electric fields, uniaxial stress, and strain.
