2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Social Statistics with focus on Digital and Computational Demography

Summary of PhD Program:

In many countries, migration has become a key driver of population change. However, traditional data on migration often lack precision, are biased or are reported with large delays. Digital traces and big data often contain information on human mobility but new methods are required to use and integrate these new forms of data with data derived from traditional sources. This is an excellent opportunity for highly-motivated and qualified candidates to work with an international team on developing cutting-edge novel statistical and computational methods in estimating and forecasting human migration with the use of traditional and new forms of data, including for developing and low-income countries.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Improving soil carbon models using energy transformations and optimality

Summary of PhD Program:

The cycling of soil organic carbon is playing a critical role in the Earth system. Currently, these dynamics are described using mass balance equations, ignoring that besides carbon also energy is being transformed. These energy transformations follow thermodynamic rules. The aim of this project is to explore if known thermodynamic constraints and optimality principles can help us to better understand soil processes and to identify simple, universal formulations to describe the potential of soils to store and cycle carbon.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

While technologies and infrastructures have never been neutral, their political and societal relevance have become more apparent in the context of (geo-)political tensions and heightened security: Ties between tech-companies and state actors are growing stronger, while efforts to achieve digital, technological, monetary and data sovereignty are intensified. This new research group, directed by Dr. Carola Westermeier, analyses how reconfigurations of socio-economic relations engendered by articulations of sovereignty manifest in concrete technologies and how technologies are in turn shaped by political demands of sovereignty and security.
