1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Optically-enabled Broadband Radio Access Networks
Summary of PhD Program:
Photonics can play an important role here by designing and developing a compact, low-power consumed and high-capacity optical front-haul for feeding a smart antenna system consisting of phased-array antennas. As the number of RF antenna elements becomes larger and the requirements for steering accuracy become stricter, the control plane becomes more complex and therefore the current technology for control plane does not work effectively anymore. A new approach needs to be explored and realized in this program, which includes realization of new devices and development artificial intelligence based control algorithms.

2. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in ultra-reliable intra-aircraft wireless communication
Summary of PhD Program:
The project will investigate techniques to guarantee high levels of reliability in wireless networks inside aircrafts, comprising robustness for interference, failure and attacks, and with high levels of availability, flexibility, and dealing with stringent latency constraints. Besides making use of well-known diversity techniques at the physical layer such as channel coding and multiple antennas, the project will investigate diversity techniques at the link and network layers. It is the intention to investigate intelligence mechanisms embedded in the network that will be able to detect, localize, analyze and predict connectivity disruptions and attacks and consequently take the necessary countermeasures. The proposed techniques will be validated using simulation tools and experimental set ups.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Photoacoustic imaging of Osteoarthritis
Summary of PhD Program:
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common and chronic joint disease. Worldwide it affects more than 10% of the people aged 60 years and older, being a major source of pain, disability, and socioeconomic cost. OA generally starts with cartilage damage, and it also involves other joint tissues, such as subchondral bone, ligaments and menisci, and the progression differs per patient. All of this presents clinicians with important challenges. Therefore, a new imaging method is needed that allows early diagnosis and reliable monitoring of OA, which is crucial to enable timely and effective interventions, help achieving better disease control, and postpone the most invasive interventions such as total joint arthroplasty.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Photonic Integrated Switches for High Performance AI Compute Clusters
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project targets the design, prototyping, and demonstration of novel nanosecond O-band photonic WDM switches and the fast control to enable novel low latency highly scalable and flat interconnect AI compute clusters. Machine learning clusters and artificial intelligence (AI) training have become increasingly popular in recent years. The recent introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT made large-scale models available to the public, which enables the integration of AI in everyday objects and tasks. As a result, the model scale is doubling yearly, causing a proportional increase in the overall model size. These developments require a highly efficient and scalable network to interconnect larger and larger amount of compute processors.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Digital Twin for personalized Behavior Change digital interventions
Summary of PhD Program:
Your PhD focus will be technically oriented, focusing on developing novel techniques to support digital health interventions. We aim to use wearable trackers and AI in the context of digital twin-based personalization. Your PhD project will specifically focus on developing a framework to deliver personalized and adaptive recommendations to participants, with the aim of improving their adherence to the intervention. Different participants are likely to have different habits and preferences, for instance, regarding eating and sporting. We expect that taking these aspects into account will be beneficial for providing recommendations tailored to the participants. Personalization will also be explored at the level of preferences for behavior change strategies (e.g., social, competitive, or health education-related), since prior studies have indicated great variability in such preferences.

6. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Control of multilevel converters / Grid-connected converter interaction
Summary of PhD Program:
Charging infrastructure for electric trucks will be concentrated on industrial estates where many distribution centres can be found. Especially in those locations, net congestion problems are expected to occur. The newly approved Nationaal Groeifonds Charging Energy Hubs project is aimed at combatting these problems through the use of smart energy solutions. Seamless integration of charging infrastructure, (renewable) energy generation, energy storage and scheduling demand of local energy consumers, will allow charging hubs to offer flexibility during peak demand and in case of grid balancing problems.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in embodied intelligent robotic bioreactors
Summary of PhD Program:
A bioreactor is a tank used to provide a tissue-specific physiological in vitro environment for the culture and maintenance of tissues and organs ex-vitro. However, the current bioreactors have limited adaptation capabilities to the cultured tissue, which impede the tissue proper development and growth. In this PhD project, you will investigate the embodied intelligence design technique to develop an adaptive, intelligent robotic bioreactor which behavior, both on the software and hardware level, can respond to the tissue needs.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sound of Smart Things
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of this research is two-fold. Firstly, it is aimed at investigating how the strengths of Tangible and Embodied Interaction can be capitalized on in a world of systems of interactive, and even smart, things. Second, this research aims to reexamine and redefine the role that sound and sound design play in interactions with systems of physical-digital hybrids. The overarching approach toward the research is that we take an ecological perspective, not regarding interaction in isolation but rather as something that is holistic, changeable, and unstable.

12. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Ultra-high-speed contact line dynamics on heterogeneous surfaces
Summary of PhD Program:
From a scientific perspective, contact line motion remains a challenging subject for both theoretical, experimental and numerical fluid mechanics due to the occurrence of a shear stress singularity at the three-phase contact line. In technological applications such as immersion lithography, it is desirable to displace liquid across a partially wettable but heterogeneous (wafer) surface as quickly as possible and without leaving any residue. In this project you will investigate the interplay between capillary and inertial aspects of contact line motion and its interaction with non-flat surface topography and variable surface composition.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multiband Photonic Integrated Wavelength Selective Switches
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project targets the design, prototyping, and demonstration of novel multiband photonic integrated circuits to enable a high-capacity optical transport architecture based on Multi-Band (MB) optical transmission and switching networks. These MB optical systems represent the next technological evolution to deal with the traffic demand and service requirements of 6G mobile networks in the most cost-effective manner. MB expands the available capacity of optical fibers by enabling transmission within S, E, and O bands, in addition to commercially available C and/or C+L bands. The total bandwidth will be around 53 THz, which translates into a potential 10x transmission capacity increase with respect to C-band only.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Digital Healthcare
Summary of PhD Program:
The developments in information and communication technologies (ICT) such as internet-of-things (IOT), artificial intelligence technologies and big data applications have advanced healthcare systems. The use of these technologies can help hospitals, traditionally at the center of healthcare systems, and other stakeholders (e.g., payers, patients) to deliver healthcare services with greater effectiveness (fewer errors, greater precision and better patient outcomes) and efficiency (e.g., cost and process optimization). Against this backdrop, many hospitals nowadays aim to implement innovative AI-based technologies such as virtual agents (e.g. virtual doctors) and chatbots in their design and operations.
