3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Modelling Recovery and Adaptation of Infrastructure Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

Our infrastructure systems are increasingly threatened by crises and shocks. Disruptions caused by storms, floods, earthquakes or geopolitical conflict therefore cascade through our critical infrastructure systems, such as transportation and energy networks. The consequences of these disruptions undermine social resilience and hamper economic growth. While resilience science and policy has aimed to improve recovery within different infrastructures, there is a need to better understand and analyse how resilience propagates across systems; and how we can improve resilience throughout the transition towards a more sustainable future.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in biocatalysis – EnzIm2Flow

Summary of PhD Program:

A sustainable chemical industry that relies less on fossil resources requires new ways to convert renewable resources like vegetable oils into useful compounds. Oleate hydratases are enzymes that can do this job very efficiently by adding water to fatty acids to produce hydroxyl fatty acids, which are important in the polymer and cosmetic industry. Until now using this enzyme commercially has been difficult due to the physical properties of the hydroxyl fatty acids and the enzyme’s low stability. The EnzIm2Flow project funded by NWO’s Open Technology program is focussed on using the enzyme in a controlled and optimized continuous flow process, where it’s immobilized to increase its stability and efficiency.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Resilient Consumer-Centric Electricity Market Design Under Deep Decarbonization

Summary of PhD Program:

In this PhD, we focus on a key challenge in the design of consumer-centric electricity markets: how do we allow consumers to hedge their long-term price risk, while providing sufficient incentives for operational efficiency and investments through real-time electricity price signals? To address this question, you will develop state-of-the-art equilibrium models to capture market clearing and price formation processes, market distortions and policy interventions, as well as consumer behavior. The focus will be on consumer attitudes, preferences and potential bounded rationality, as well as institutional arrangements that influence consumers’ decision making. You will advance state-of-the-art market design concepts, such as capacity subscriptions and affordability options, tailored to the needs of small-scale consumers.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human-Centred AI for Crisis Management

Summary of PhD Program:

In this PhD, you will work on analysing the impact of information provided by an AI on human decision-making in groups of professional emergency responders. You will then translate these empirical insights on human-AI interaction into formal models for crowd safety decision-making. Starting from theory-building work, you will first develop a framework on human-AI information acquisition and decision-making to formulate a range of hypotheses that we will test empirically. From there, we will develop a serious game to understand how human decision-makers acquire and share information under time pressure from an AI.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Human Autonomy in Human-AI interaction for Crowd Crises

Summary of PhD Program:

A major challenge in crises is the combination of complexity, time pressure and moral decisions. AI has the potential to support first responders in crowd crises decisions, yet the increasing use of AI has led to a debate about the legal and ethical implications if decisions are automated and supported by AI. In this PhD project, we go beyond the ‘human in the loop’ paradigm, and investigate the implications of automation at scale in human-AI teams. This PhD is part of the NWO-funded AI-COMPASS project.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Low-power High-dynamic Range Image Sensor

Summary of PhD Program:

Image sensors have been used widely in our daily lives. In this project, we will develop a low-power image sensor for IoT applications such as environment monitoring in remote areas. Two key aspects are critical for this application: low power and high dynamic range. While the first requirement is very straightforward, the second requirement enables the image sensor to be used in an outdoor environment where the light intensity can differ throughout the day.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cluster Wake Control

Summary of PhD Program:

Wind turbines packed in large offshore wind farms hinder each other by the formation of turbulent wind wakes, which lead to large efficiency losses at downstream turbines. With the growing number and attention for wind farms, it becomes clear that the wake effect is not only present on a turbine-to-turbine level, but also on a farm-to-farm level. On a wind farm level the energy extraction by each individual turbine cumulates, leaving a pronounced wake in the downstream region, the so-called cluster wakes.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Tectono-Sedimentary Evolution of the Northern Margin of the Saharan platform, Tunisia

Summary of PhD Program:

This multiscale and multidisciplinary geological project aims at understanding the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the northern margin of the Saharan platform during the Early Mesozoic. This period of time is key because it marks the end of the Variscan orogeny and the onset of a succession of tectonic events influencing lithospheric vertical movements (subsidence and exhumation) that are currently debated in the scientific community. These vertical movements shaped the Triassic and Jurassic landscape and influenced erosion patterns which controlled the deposition of sedimentary units.
