1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Social and Sustainable Entrepreneurship
Summary of PhD Program:
Small and medium enterprises (SME’s) are increasingly pivoting their business activities towards environmental and societal well-being — creating so-called hybrid organisations. Simultaneously, society and policy makers pressure firms to do so, assuming overall positive effects on society and the economy. In this position, you will investigate how SME’s and governments can steer decision-making towards sustainability practices that enable socio-environmental, as well as financial performance at the firm and regional level. The research will draw on novel data from leading organisations in the field of business and social impact. You will actively collaborate with experts from sustainable business, entrepreneurship, innovation, political economy and finance.
Application Deadline: 30 June 2023
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Epigenetics and Gene Regulation
Summary of PhD Program:
A multitude of DNA sequence-dependent and -independent interactions between transcriptional regulators and the genome are required for tissue-specific gene expression and cell identity. Interference or lack of specificity in this process results in defective embryonic development and can give rise to various human diseases, including cancer. One particular layer that regulates these processes are modifications of histones and DNA. Such epigenetic modifications contribute to gene expression control through influencing the recruitment of regulatory factors to specific regions in the genome.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Economics
Summary of PhD Program:
The candidate will be involved in the project ‘Green investments, insurance decisions, and their relation to risk and social preferences’. The aim of this project is to study to what extent risk and ambiguity in the context of insurance and investments are influenced by climate-change induced uncertainty, and how it affects individuals’ willingness to pay or invest. The study will involve the fields of behavioural economics, behavioural finance and possibly development economics. The candidate will also have freedom to pursue their own research interests.
Application Deadline: 2 July 2023
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in AI-Enabled Teamwork
Summary of PhD Program:
Effective team building is the backbone of most successful projects. Yet, forming effective teams is far from trivial. The latest advances in AI are further expanding our understanding of what constitutes an ideal team and how to support it, for example with emerging types of teams comprising not only humans but also humans and AI. This PhD project will investigate how AI can facilitate, optimise, and scale the collaboration of human-human and human-AI teams, with focus on teams working on creative and complex tasks.
Application Deadline: 31 July 2023
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Evaluating Greenland glacier-lake interaction
Summary of PhD Program:
You will utilise a combined approach of remote sensing, field measurements, and numerical modelling to identify and parameterise the controlling factors for glacier retreat. Specifically, you will investigate various physical processes acting at the ice-lake boundary to improve an existing calving flowline model for lake-terminating glaciers. The insights of the flowline modelling will be used to develop data-driven parameterisations for calving and subaqueous melt that can be applied in an ice sheet model (IMAUICE and/or UFEMISM). The model will be set up for a selected region in South Greenland to understand the impact of climate change on outlet glaciers.
Application Deadline: 25 August 2023
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Statistics/ Social sciences
Summary of PhD Program:
The proposed research investigates a novel tool for aggregating evidence from studies that investigate a common theory but are too diverse to aggregate with traditional approaches (e.g., meta-analysis). When studies vary considerably with regard to research design, operationalisations of key variables or statistical models used, the parameter estimates or effect sizes may no longer be comparable across studies. This can typically be the case in conceptual replications and complicates the quantification of the evidence for a scientific claim over multiple conceptual replications studies.
Application Deadline: 29 June 2023
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Influential/ Performative Machine Learning
Summary of PhD Program:
Key requirements in the use of AI systems are transparency, robustness, and human oversight. This is particularly challenging in non-stationary environments, such as evolving data streams, where distributions might be subject to drift. Complementing previous research on change detection and adaptation, a current research focus is understanding distributional changes and their causes. Of particular interest in the context of this research are feedback loops: these occur, when a machine learning system causes itself changes in its environment, through its predictions and resulting actions.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Enabling Societal Missions
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD position is part of the Enabling Societal Missions through Entrepreneurial Ecosystems (ESMEE) project, which aims to help improve the effectiveness of Regional Development Agencies in stimulating sustainable entrepreneurship to achieve societal missions. Achieving societal missions requires radical innovations by entrepreneurs who are driven by sustainability concerns and can act outside the status quo. However, the Netherlands has a low level of sustainable entrepreneurship. Regional conditions must be improved to increase the prevalence and success of sustainable entrepreneurship. The ESMEE project proposes a data-and dialogue driven entrepreneurial ecosystem approach to improve the functioning of mission-driven innovation systems.
Application Deadline: 30 June 2023
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Equine Reproduction
Summary of PhD Program:
We don’t yet understand how to trigger the dynamic events enabling stallion spermatozoa to achieve fertilizing ability, ‘capacitation’. Accordingly, in vitro production of horse embryos relies on intracytoplasmic sperm injection, and tools for investigating stallion subfertility are limited. To address these deficits a better understanding of `capacitation-related characteristics’ in stallion spermatozoa is required. These signaling processes are poorly understood but play a crucial role in a stallion’s fertility potential. The PhD candidate will investigate sperm capacitation using various analytical techniques. The objectives of this project include the application of conventional IVF using equine oocytes and cooled and frozen/thawed stallion semen; and the development of functional capacitation induction tests to screen sub-fertile stallions.
Application Deadline: 24 July 2023
10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Virology: coronavirus replication
Summary of PhD Program:
You will have the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research in fundamental virology as a member of a multidisciplinary NWO XL-funded consortium. The consortium’s goal is to uncover the very early stages of coronavirus infection. To this end, we bring together a diverse team of experts on single molecule biophysics, theoretical biophysics and super resolution microscopy from Universities across the Netherlands. As a molecular virologist, you will play a central role in the project. The project provides an unique environment to receive training in molecular virology, beyond state-of-the-art biophysics and microscopy. We aim to prepare you for a successful career in infection biology and biomedical research.
Application Deadline: 7 August 2023
11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Global Scale Stable Isotope Measurements on Atmospheric Methane
Summary of PhD Program:
In this position you will join a and be responsible for measuring and interpreting the stable isotopic composition of atmospheric methane. Methane is emitted from different sources to the atmosphere and carries a distinct isotopic composition that is characteristic for the respective source process. This composition can be used to quantify the relative contributions of methane from different source categories in the atmosphere, and methane isotope measurements are becoming a standard tool for source partitioning.
Application Deadline: 14 August 2023
12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Women in Policing
Summary of PhD Program:
The Department of Sociology external link has a job opening for a PhD position in the topic of Women in Policing. The project will assess how gender diversification in police organisations can influence policing outcomes and the experiences of women in policing. Gender diversification in policing has been argued as the solution to many problems in policing, including reducing disproportionate use of force and misconduct, building trust with communities, adopting non-traditional policing tactics, and improving job satisfaction more generally. In addition, women in leadership positions are considered particularly relevant for fostering changes to organisational culture, yet the number of women in police leadership positions remains low.
