1. Fully Funded PhD Position in biophysical basis of neural computation with machine learning
Summary of PhD Program:
The Gonçalves lab is a recently founded research group at the Neuro-Electronics Flanders (NERF), Belgium. We are currently exploring a range of exciting topics at the intersection between computational neuroscience and probabilistic machine learning. In particular, we develop machine learning methods to derive mechanistic insights from neuroscience data, and apply them to challenging neuroscience problems: from the retrieval of complex input-output functions of biophysically-detailed single neurons to the full characterisation of mechanisms of compensation for perturbations in neural circuits [1-3]. We work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and supportive work environment, which emphasizes diversity and inclusion.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in emotional circuit development
Summary of PhD Program:
The research project, under the supervision of principal investigator Esther Klingler, will focus on the development of emotional circuits combining experimental and computational approaches. Emotional states vary a lot across life and rely on proper amygdala function. Here, you will investigate the development of amygdala nuclei, which are composed of heterogeneous neuron types, receiving specific input and projecting to diverse brain regions, like the prefrontal cortex, the hippocampus, or the striatum, each implicated in different emotion-related function (e.g. fear, emotional memory, anxiety). For this, you will use a combination of advanced cellular and molecular techniques in developing mice, from viral axon tracing, to single-cell and spatial RNA sequencing. You will also use new computational strategies to analyze your data and integrate them with readily available multi-omics adult datasets.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins
Summary of PhD Program:
A Ph.D. position is available in the laboratory “Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins” at the VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology, Brussels, Belgium. For our growing team, we are offering a Ph.D. position to solve membrane protein structures through cryo-EM. The lab offers several projects on disease-relevant ion channels, lipid scramblases, and transporters which will be negotiated with the candidate. Our projects are connected to central cell biological and neurobiological questions but offer also aspects of translational research.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in cancer research
Summary of PhD Program:
Omics-based strategies ((epi-)genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, …) are opening the unprecedented potential for developing novel precision oncology tools for improved diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy response prediction of cancer patients. Liquid biopsies are now offering great potential for the non-invasive exploration of circulating tumor nucleic acids and cells. Recently, our team has implemented DNA methylation sequencing on tumor tissue and liquid biopsy samples of cancer patients to allow improved diagnosis and classification of the tumor. The new Ph.D. student will further develop, optimize, implement, apply, and validate this novel approach (both on the analytical and bio-informatic side). The final aim of the project is to improve the diagnosis of adult cancer patients with an unknown primary tumor location.
