1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geodynamics and Surface Processes
Summary of PhD Program:
There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in Geodynamics and Surface Processes: 3D evolution of foreland fold-and-thrust belts, links between deposition, salt tectonics and climate, including orography, southern Pyrenees at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Bergen. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4 th year with compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). The EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network for Climate-Tectonics Interactions (INITIATE, https://www.initiate-dn.eu/) comprises thirteen PhD projects.
Application Deadline: 15th August 2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geodynamics and Surface Processes
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project aims to quantify and model the 3D evolution of the southern Andes foreland foldand-thrust belt. The structural style of the foreland fold and thrust belt (FTB) as observed in the external parts of the Andes shows significant along strike variability in width, structural style, and topography that appears linked to pre-existing structure (i.e., the so-called broken foreland and extensional inheritance), to variations in available shale and / or salt decollements, and to variable sediment input. The relative importance of these controls, the consequence for 3D variations in FTB structure, and how the resulting topography controls sediment routing systems are unclear.
Application Deadline: 15th August 2024

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in high-resolution sedimentary dynamics of rifts during rapid climate change
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project aims to investigate the stratigraphic signature of rift basins with respect to the role of short-term (<100 kyr) climate change on syn-rift depositionalsystems orthe coupling between climate-driven changes in surface processes (erosion/sediment supply) and rift deformation. The initial objective is to analyse the sedimentology and stratigraphy of an active rift where it is possible to constrain tectonic and climatic controls at high resolution, and where the sediment source areas are still preserved, such as the Corinth Rift, Greece. The PhD candidate will then simulate the stratigraphic architecture of syn-rift depositional systems using tectonic, climatic and sediment supply parameters derived from the Corinth Rift (Years 1 and 2).
Application Deadline: 15th August 2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geodynamics and Surface Processes
Summary of PhD Program:
3D response of active rift evolution to surface processes: the Corinth Rift system, Greece This PhD project aims to quantify and model the 3D response of active rift evolution to surface processes in the Corinth Rift system. The currently active Corinth Rift is one of the best documented rift systems on Earth with high resolution mapping of both onshore and offshore fault and basin structure constraining its evolution. The rift system localizes deformation in the Gulf of Corinth with earlier rift faults onshore towards the south. However, it is unclear what controls the migration of rift faults in time space and progressive localisation of deformation. Main objectives of this project are to understand how progressive shifting of depocenters towards the present Gulf feedbacks into rift fault formation and migration and how inheritance and surface processes control 3D rift fault growth, linkage, and stratigraphic architecture.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Causal Decision Making
Summary of PhD Program:
This project is interested in considering how causal models can be learned and exploited in the context of decision-making. In particular, it will consider the scenario in which one or more learning agents have the possibility of relying on multiple causal models describing their environment. Research will span the space of causality, causal abstraction, causal representation learning and reinforcement learning; the PhD project itself can follow multiple directions, ranging from more theoretical studies on how these models may be related and what guarantees they could provide, to more methodological research on the design of novel algorithms aimed at improving decision-making.
Application Deadline: 11th August 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Algorithms
Summary of PhD Program:
You are expected to contribute to leading-edge research in both theoretical and applied algorithms and algorithms engineering, as well as teaching of high international quality. As a PhD student in the department, you will be a part of the ICT research school, enabling interactions with PhD students across various research fields. The school organizes annual meetings and monthly lunches, and provides courses in scientific and application writing. Besides working towards your PhD degree, you will have the opportunity to contribute to teaching, outreach, and other departmental tasks for 25% of your time.
Application Deadline: 11th August 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in applied and computational mathematics – CSSR
Summary of PhD Program:
CSSR is a national research center dedicated to providing new subsurface knowledge and digital solutions to drastically reduce Norway’s offshore emissions. To support the ambitions of the CSSR, this project aims to develop, analyze and implement new nonlinear iterative solvers, with the goal of exploiting models of various complexity, ranging from high-performance computing, via reduced-order models to data-driven (machine-learned) representations. In particular, we are interested in the joint applicability of such models and to what extent simpler models (possibly based on machine learning) can be integrated into full-physics simulation.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Visualization
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of the VASCUL-AID project is to predict the risk of cardiovascular events and progression of the vascular diseases Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) and Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) to influence the course of disease improving the patient’s quality of life and care and assisting clinicians to make better-informed decisions involving the patient. The project will identify patients who are at high risk for AAA growth or PAD progression and cardiovascular events through a trustworthy AI-driven platform (VASCUL-AID) that integrates multi-source parameters including imaging, proteomic and genomic data as well as life-style patient data from wearables to enable personalised vascular disease management. The VASCUL-AID platform consists of AI risk-prediction tools, a patient communication app and a clinical dashboard to support clinical decision-making.

12. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Comparative Politics
Summary of PhD Program:
The project addresses the impact of demographic change on representative democracy. The growing proportion of senior citizens across European populations increases their influence on elections and policy decisions. How does this affect the political representation of old, young, and future generations’ interests? To assess the impact of demographic change on Generational Political Pluralism in Norway, Europe, and beyond, the project investigates generational cleavages in two integral parts of policymaking: public opinion and political representation. The empirical analyses draw on a combination of observational, behavioural, and experimental data and will use a range of innovative methods like survey experiments, text analysis, and social network analysis to make descriptive and causal inferences.
Application Deadline: 2nd August 2024
13. Fully Funded PhD Position in parasitology
Summary of PhD Program:
One of the biggest challenges for salmon farming is the ectoparasite salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis). Strong spread of the parasite threatens wild salmon and current treatment methods for farmed salmon result in poor fish welfare. The research fellow’s assignment will focus on studying the host-parasite interaction between salmon and salmon lice. Among other things, this will be investigated using gene knock-down of relevant louse genes and infection trials. The knowledge should contribute to enhance our understanding of these interactions which can inform the development of new and effective treatment methods against lice. Various molecular techniques, including high-throughput sequencing, RNA interference, and in situ hybridization will be employed in this study.
