4. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Science focusing on nontarget mass spectrometry

Summary of PhD Program:

These two doctoral projects involve optimization and application of analytical methods and data processing workflows based on nontarget mass spectrometry of air samples collected globally (funded by FORMAS) or in human biofluids (funded by VR and SciLifeLab). Research will include optimization of sample preparation steps, and the development of data processing strategies using open science tools for identification of unknown molecules in complex samples, with emphasis on quality control at all stages.

The projects can make use of GC- and LC-Orbitrap technology available at ScilifeLab in the Exposomics group. The research positions are funded for 4 years and you will work as part of a bigger team involving international research scientists to understand the sources of environmental chemical exposures.

5. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in digital philology

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of DigPhil is to create a strong and state-of-the-art doctoral research environment in early languages (up to and including the eighteenth century), educating modern philologists who are well aware of the disciplinary traditions but also have solid competence in language technology. The research school broadly defines philology as the integrated study of languages and texts in their historical contexts.

Philology continues a tradition founded in the Library of Alexandria in the third century BCE and consists in a dynamic and cross-disciplinary interaction between textual criticism and book history, historical linguistics, various forms of textual analysis (metrics, rhetoric, narratology etc.) and hermeneutics.

Digital methods and tools can be developed and applied in all of these areas, e.g. using AI to restore fragmentary texts, making use of computational approaches in comparative historical linguistics, performing automized stylometry or narrative analysis, or reading and extracting facts from texts with data-mining methods.

6. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Biophysics

Summary of PhD Program:

We search for a PhD candidate for biophysical studies of proteins catalyzing biological energy conversion, in particular enzymes of respiratory chains. The project is focused on how membrane-bound enzymes systems capture and store chemical energy and transduce this into other energy forms. The project will address the structure, function, and dynamics of these fascinating proteins, by combining methodology from computational, biochemical, biophysical, machine learning, and structural techniques.

The PhD candidate will work closely with other PhD students, postdocs and senior scientists of the lab in an interdisciplinary team. Several projects related bioenergetics and protein function are possible depending on the background and interests of the applicant.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geography

Summary of PhD Program:

The Urban Africa group is one of the research profiles at the Department of Human Geography. The group investigates the multi-faceted social, economic and political processes shaping urban life on the African continent. The research is attentive both to global processes and ideals and to the role played by highly diverse local actors. This includes exploring the myriad initiatives through which urban residents re-make cities from below, and the complex and shifting ways of governing life in the city.

The group conducts research on a range of evolving themes including urban infrastructures, the politics of informal livelihoods, the processes and outcomes of housing policies, and the (re)making of public space. Drawing upon qualitative methods and diverse theoretical approaches, the research covers a variety of dimensions and processes such as socio-spatial transformation, the role of materiality and the multitude of experiences and urban imaginaries.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geography

Summary of PhD Program:

Residential mobility is the study of how and why people move between different places of residence, and the consequences of these movements for individuals and communities. This field explores the factors that drive people to move, such as changes in work, family, or housing circumstances, and how these movements impact the social, economic, and cultural fabric of communities.

Segregation is the study of how social groups are separated from one another in space, and the effects of these spatial divisions on opportunity structures and social inequality. This field examines aspects that lead to the formation of segregation, such as socio-economic, ethnic and demographic aspects, and the consequences of segregation for access to resources and opportunities, social capital, and community cohesion. This research also includes studies of policy measures and strategies to reduce segregation and promote housing equality.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Butterfly Evolutionary Ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

A 4-year fully funded PhD position is available in the Snook lab focused on the ecological and evolutionary consequences of climate warming on natural populations of several European butterfly species. Negative effects of warming on reproductive processes are well-known but incorporating these effects into models forecasting responses to climate change are relatively rare.

The project aims to quantify the fitness effects of increasing heat using multiple pairs of butterfly species adapted to different environments, and determine evolutionary potential via local adaptation among populations of these species. By measuring reproductive traits that are affected by heat stress, we can develop field-based assays assessing natural occurring heat-induced sterility in wild populations. These lab and field based empirical results will be used, along with citizen science monitoring data and climate data, in ecological models forecasting future climate change responses. This work compliments and expands ongoing work in the Snook lab using Drosophila.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physical Geography

Summary of PhD Program:

Inland still waters provide key ecosystem services to humans, whether natural, such as lakes and wetlands, or anthropogenic such as reservoirs. Since freshwater supply, storage, and water power for electricity are the most relevant services for humans, the waters providing these services are the most monitored. However, most inland waters remain unmonitored. For instance, less than 1% of all lakes is being monitored in Sweden. Unmonitored inland still waters are already facing threats from accelerated Earth system change, driven by direct human activities and climate change.

Worryingly, the effects of Earth system change on unmonitored water resources remain unknown. Water levels in still waters may be already changing beyond their thresholds for ecosystem service provision. Although future plans exist to monitor still inland waters, there is an increasing need to observe and quantify the latest and ongoing hydrological changes in still inland waters. Such monitoring is the only way to determine climate-related risks to water supply and resources.
