1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Food and Formulation Engineering–turbulent emulsifiers

Summary of PhD Program:

At an industrial scale, emulsions are formed in emulsification devices such as rotor-stator mixers and high-pressure homogenizers. Drop breakup takes place due to turbulent interactions. The fundamental understanding of turbulent drop breakup has advances significantly. However, a critical component is missing. Emulsification occurs in the presence of molecules such as egg or milk proteins, or smaller surfactant. These modify the interface. We know this influences the breakup process, but we do not know how. This project will explore this in-depth.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in bioinformatics and machine learning

Summary of PhD Program:

The project aims to understand how codon usage has evolved in organisms, to uncover why and where conservation of codons is central to organismal fitness, and how the three dimensional structures of proteins impact codon choices in coding genes. The recruited doctoral student will develop methods to broadly study patterns of codon usage across organisms and apply large scale evolutionary analysis. A central component of the research will be to develop machine learning and deep learning methods trained on coding sequences and protein structure to extract patterns in data and to draw mechanistic conclusions. 8. Fully Funded PhD Position in immunotechnology focusing on data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics

Summary of PhD Program:

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties will also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%). Your research focus will be machine learning for precision medicine within oncology. You will develop interpretable deep learning models of tumor microenvironments from tissue images and spatial omics data. The project objective is to develop implementable tools for prognosis and classification of tumors. The project will also contribute with knowledge of immune responses in different tumors which can lead to novel treatment strategies.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ophthalmology, Medical Imaging Analysis

Summary of PhD Program:

The project constitutes a central part of a larger initiative focused on non-invasive skin tumor diagnostics. Over the past seven years, various optical measurement methods have been acquired and further developed within the group, resulting in a substantial amount of data that now requires thorough analysis. The aim is to generate new images that can form the basis for more accurate diagnoses. Previous proof-of-concept studies have shown that machine learning has great potential to reduce subjective interpretation, allowing for a more automated approach, which is essential for actual clinical use.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Science

Summary of PhD Program:

It is important for a doctoral student to be devoted to the doctoral education and therefore you will be both a student as well as employed at Lund University. You will carry out, analyze and compile population data, survey studies and qualitative interview studies with the aim of identifying factors that influence overweight and obesity in vulnerable areas with focus on young adults. Based on the findings, you will develop intervention models that address barriers and facilitators to behavioral change. In the project, the general population is studied but also specific groups such as socio-economically vulnerable groups, young adults and groups born outside Sweden where overweight and obesity is prevalent.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in experimental cardiovascular research

Summary of PhD Program:

A disturbed balance between injury to the vascular wall and repair of this injury is a key factor in the development of atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction. Previous studies have shown that oxidized LDL is an important cause of injury and inflammation in the vascular wall. It has also been shown that a reduced ability to produce growth factors for endothelial cells are associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction. The research group has in collaboration with external partners developed two drug candidates for treatment of these conditions. One is an antibody against oxidized LDL and the other is a peptide with biological properties similar to those naturally occurring endothelial growth factors. This PhD project focuses on elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms through these drug candidates have their action.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Automatic Control with focus on Optimization for Learning

Summary of PhD Program:

We invite applications for one to two PhD positions dedicated to developing methodologies for the automated analysis and design of first-order optimization algorithms. Such algorithms form the backbone of contemporary machine learning, yet conventional training methods often overlook the rich problem geometry that, when properly exploited, can enhance performance. In this project, we will, e.g., investigate the potential of a novel semidefinite-programming framework as a foundation for developing automated methodologies for algorithm design and analysis. Upon success, this could transform how algorithm analysis and design are performed and can lead to novel high-performing methods for applications in machine learning, control, and beyond.
