7. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD studentship will incorporate lab exposure assays to different pesticide classes across a temperature gradient. It will bring together three primary work packages over a three-year period, involving experiments to 1) understand how thermally dependent processes that underpin energy metabolism and body thermoregulation are influenced by pesticides across a temperature range; 2) Quantify the pesticide thermal response relationships of behaviours that are dependent on metabolic rate and body thermoregulation; 3) Assess how collective behaviour and thermoregulation of brood under different cold and warm conditions are affected by pesticide exposure.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Policy
Summary of PhD Program:
Research topics vary significantly among PhD candidates; themes in recent years have included carbon capture and storage, climate change finance, closed-loop business models and water scarcity. Study is self-directed, and students explore their chosen topic under the supervision of one or two members of the Department’s academic supervisors. Further support is provided through periodic meetings with an academic review panel composed of the student’s supervisor and two other faculty members.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Materials
Summary of PhD Program:
The project will focus on fabrication and detailed assessment of optimized architectures for electrodes in sodium ion batteries, based on numerical simulations carried out as part of the wider project. In particular, the PhD program will develop and implement advanced operando characterization tools, based on X-ray, Raman and electron microscopy. It will exploit state-of-the-art equipment available at Imperial, including a brand new suite of atomic resolution instruments specified for electrochemical device studies, and in situ cells available as part of a collaboration with the Diamond Light Source national Facility.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
We are seeking applications from enthusiastic graduates for a 3.5-year PhD studentship. Designing polymeric materials suitable for biomedical applications requires a deep understanding of the structure-property relationships. This project will aim to design novel, well-defined polymeric materials and evaluate how their chemistry and structure affect their physical properties and the ultimate biomedical application. Thus, it will include the synthesis and characterisation of polymers using controlled/living polymerisation techniques and the physical-chemical characterisation of aqueous based polymer solutions.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aeronautics: Turbulence under strain
Summary of PhD Program:
You will experimentally quantify the flow-physics of fundamental turbulent flows, as their mean strain is varied from high to low levels, and will document the failure of classical theories to describe intermediate strain regimes. The produced data-set will be utilized to develop a novel theoretical framework for intermediate strain turbulence, based on previous work conducted in Imperial. The project will heavily rely on laboratory experiments, conducted in the state-of-the-art wind tunnel facilities of the Aeronautics Department, and will utilize novel theoretical and machine learning tools.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aeronautics: Machine Learning Modelling for Nonlinear Aeroelastics
Summary of PhD Program:
Airbus has an ambitious agenda for developing new wing technologies to dramatically increase fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 of their next generation aircraft. Increasing wing span and reducing structural weight are two of the most attractive means to realise this goal. However, this can only be achieved through the development of advanced load alleviation technologies such as wing pop-up spoilers. New predictive tools are required that can model the nonlinear aeroelastic effects to the required accuracy and in a time efficient manner so they can inform design decisions.
Application Deadline: 31st March 2025
14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aeronautics: Multiple PhD Studentship in Aeronautics: Turbulence intermittency for cloud physics
Summary of PhD Program:
Warm cumulus clouds are aerosols of liquid water droplets in a highly turbulent environment. The interaction between the turbulence and the cloud droplets can cause the droplets to collide with one another, coalescing into larger and larger droplets which may eventually precipitate out of the cloud as rainfall. However, the intermittent nature of the interaction between patches of intense turbulence (that are a common feature of high-Reynolds-number cloud turbulence) and droplets is not well understood.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aeronautics: Magnetic Suspension Balances (MSBS) for Drag Reduction
Summary of PhD Program:
MSBS offer an unrivalled opportunity for making sting-free measurements of time-dependent forces acting on aerodynamic models. Except for the usual challenges associated with Reynolds-number dependence, an MSBS offers the best way of estimating forces on engineering bodies as in ‘flight’, such as submarines, UAVs and re-entry space capsules. Often such bodies operate in a mixed ballistic / aerodynamically assisted regime.
