2. Fully Funded PhD Position in The hybridity of polluted freshwaters

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, the PhD student will adopt a critical perspective on the cause and effect of polluted freshwaters. Using actor-network theory, you will examine the complex network of actors, networks, and actants in the pollution of freshwater and its consequences on socio-hydrological systems. Assigning anthropogenic activities as a key factor in polluted freshwater ignores pollution as a manifestation of complex socio-hydrological effect. The research will employ ethnographic, historical and hydrographic research tools to explore the co-production of pollution in the dormancy of everyday lives. It will demonstrate the ‘interconnectedness’ between freshwater, societal values, norms, political economies, cultures and discourses.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental and Numerical Study of Parameters Affecting the Wake Dynamics of a Simplified Car

Summary of PhD Program:

Air quality is a major public health issue worldwide. Two origins can be identified for pollutant particles that emanated from road transport vehicles. The dynamics of exhaust and non-exhaust pollutants released into the atmosphere in the wake of passenger cars are still poorly understood. An enhanced understanding of these physical processes involved in the dispersion of pollutants is essential. The flow topology must be accurately described and analysed while both the flow and the interaction of the flow and particles must be better understood. Our ability to find solutions to either limit the infiltration of pollutants into car cabins (and thus reduce the exposure of the occupants) or to identify areas where they can accumulate (areas to be avoided by pedestrians and cyclists) depends on these issues. This is the context of this PhD project.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of Advanced Coatings for Improved Environmental Performance

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project involves researching the bridging technologies on behalf of the industrial sponsor Siemens Energy Industrial Turbomachinery Limited, which is a manufacturer of industrial gas turbines (IGT). The successful research into those bridging technologies (which will include modelling and experimental work) will reduce greenhouse emissions by enabling operation of the IGTs at higher metal temperatures and with novel fuels. The proposed research therefore aims to develop coating technologies, which will provide component materials the ability to cope with higher operating temperatures, and may be further beneficial when hydrogen fuel, or other novel green fuels, become standard, as these fuels may induce higher operating temperatures.
