This collaborative doctoral project, in partnership with the Manchester City of Literature and diverse local communities within Greater Manchester, will make a practical case for the contribution literature and creative writing can make not only to the future direction of civic arts policy but also to the lived experiences of diverse individuals, communities, and stakeholder groups. It will do this by foregrounding – through co-creation and working in partnership – how the fluid, plural, and marginalised dimensions of place can deliver these kinds of benefits for tolerance, cohesion, pride and wellbeing.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Practises make places: artists’ responses to ‘prehistoric’ monuments

Summary of PhD Program:

The project works with English Heritage to better understand the long history of creative responses to the historic environment and prehistoric monuments across England, with a focus on outsider art and alternative narratives. Combining methods from heritage studies, art history and public archaeology, this project focuses on henge monuments in the care of English Heritage, making use of archives on key northern sites such as Thornborough, Mayburgh, Arbor Lowe and Castlerigg, with comparisons to broader artistic histories of ‘prehistoric’ monuments.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Too much touch? Enabling a better understanding of the use of touch in dementia care

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will use the sociological method of conversation analysis to examine the use of touch as it occurs between patients and staff on acute healthcare of the older person hospital wards. Analysis will begin with an existing corpus of video-recorded data, but the successful candidate will also collect and analyse new data to supplement this. The project aims to provide a more detailed contribution to the empirical basis for delivering dementia care, and to develop a training resource for staff grounded in this empirical research.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Maternal postnatal depression and breastfeeding: developing and testing new psychometric measure of breastfeeding distress

Summary of PhD Program:

Successful breastfeeding and good maternal mental health are global health goals and key to long term health of both mothers and their children. However, relationships between breastfeeding and maternal mental health are highly complex, but poorly understood. Women with postnatal depression are less likely to breastfeed, but we also know that approximately 70% of women experience difficulties with breastfeeding, such as breast pain and breast infections.

This study aims to investigate the associations between maternal genetic risk for endometriosis on mental health outcomes in mothers with endometriosis and their children, using longitudinal cohort data from the ongoing Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) and qualitative interview methods, knowledge which will contribute directly to optimising care for women with endometriosis and their children/wider family system.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Co-production of an education and training framework in shared decision-making to enable healthcare practitioners to deliver person-centred care to people with aphasia

Patient involvement in decisions is fundamental to ethical care and is associated with superior care outcomes and patient and carer satisfaction. Existing evidence suggests healthcare practitioners need to improve their practice in supporting patients with communication disabilities to be involved in decision-making. Mental capacity in relation to sexual decision-making for people with learning disabilities is a complex issue affecting people with learning disabilities and the health and social care (HSC) practitioners who support them. This fully-funded PhD studentship will explore the challenges HSC practitioners face when applying the Mental Capacity Act to assess the capacity of people with learning disabilities to consent to sexual relationships and investigate the implications for the daily lives and sexual and reproductive rights of people with learning disabilities.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in How do we process complex social information for rapid appropriate responses in social interactions? An EEG ERP study with young adults and adolescents

Summary of PhD Program:

The project will use EEG event related potentials (ERPs) to examine this in adults and in children. The candidate will design and conduct EEG and behavioural experiments with adult participants using stimuli previously developed by the research team (Bland et al., 2021). They will collaborate with children, parents, and teachers to develop age-appropriate stimuli for 12-year-olds and subsequently employ these stimuli in an EEG study investigating social cognitive processes in this age group.

The limited secondary literature on the topic focuses disproportionately on the fascist regimes in Italy and Germany, and almost no comparative work has been done on fascist visual cultures transnationally. By comparing the fascist regime in Mussolini’s Italy to movements in France and Romania, the research team will be able to show how the differing availability of technology and distinct visual cultures in western, eastern and southern Europe resulted in contrasting uses of photography and film across the continent.
