1. PhD Programs in Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy

Summary of PhD Positions:

The goal of this PhD project is to explore bottom-up atomic spin systems to understand multi-well energy landscapes and their use for brain-inspired computing. One of the paradigms in brain-inspired computing is based on creating attractor networks, where metastable local minima are used to represent information. In physics, such multi-well landscapes can be created from glassy spin systems, which exhibit metastable order. In 2020 (1), we hypothesised that atomic arrays of spins can be used to create such multi-well landscapes by using long-range interactions that lead to frustration.

2. PhD Programs in Design of Digital Self-Monitoring for Cardiovascular Disease

Summary of PhD Positions:

The Mydigitwin consortium consists of data scientists, medical imaging analysts, cardiologists, data science companies and patient groups. The aim is to develop a digital platform and an app in which citizens can directly compare their personal health data with big-data reference data, in order to inform them whether they are ‘at risk’ for cardiovascular diseases. The underlying idea is that these digital technologies contribute to self-management, preventative health behaviour and improved interaction with health care professionals.

4. PhD Programs in Shifting Perceptions of Ayahuasca

Summary of PhD Positions:

The Radboud Institute for Culture and History seeks a PhD candidate for the NWO-funded project ‘Poison, Medicine or Magic Potion? Shifting Perceptions of Drugs in and from Latin America (1820-2020)’. The conception of drugs has differed greatly over time, and the distinction between ‘illegal drugs’ and ‘legal medicines’ continues to be contested. An increasing number of scientists claim that it is necessary to demythologise drugs and to revise the perception of drugs as a threat to society. Latin America plays a key role in this debate, as psychoactive substances are part of its natural resources and indigenous cultural history.

5. PhD Programs in Shifting Perceptions of Peyote

Summary of PhD Positions:

The main aim of this project is to analyse the changing perceptions of drugs in Latin America from the continent’s independence to our present day (1820-2020). The project focuses on the representation of ayahuasca, peyote and coca/cocaine over time. The project uses a partially unexplored corpus of discourses on these plants, including literature, ethnography and travel writing. The project will nuance the complex yet often reductive link between drugs and violence by studying the multifaceted perceptions of drugs from a cross-cultural, diachronic and interdisciplinary perspective.

6. PhD Programs in Transformative Sustainability Governance in the Brazilian Amazon

Summary of PhD Positions:

How do policies for the promotion of bio-economies foster inclusive, pluralistic, integrative and adaptive governance arrangements in the Brazilian Amazon? Transforming governance of resource use in the Brazilian Amazon is crucial to prevent global biodiversity loss, to help mitigate climate change, and to empower marginalized groups. To this purpose, diverse indigenous and international development organizations, together with stakeholders from the business community currently experiment with so-called ‘socio-biodiversity value-chains’.

7. PhD Programs in Syntactic Transfer in Bilingual Sentence Reading

Summary of PhD Positions:

The Centre for Language Studies (CLS) seeks a PhD candidate for the NWO-funded project ‘The statistics of language as a novel window into the multilingual mind’, which investigates how the languages of a bilingual affect each other during language comprehension. You will collaborate in a small project team that investigates how a bilingual’s languages interact during the comprehension of written sentences. Your main task will be to design and run experiments in which participants read in English and Dutch while their eye movements and brain activity (EEG) are recorded.

8. PhD Programs in Genome Regulation of Embryonic Development

Summary of PhD Positions:

The early mammalian embryo, or epiblast, is composed of pluripotent cells that can generate all specialized cell types of the body. The epiblast cell population is heterogeneous, showing stochastic differences in transcriptome and epigenome between cells that affect their differentiation potential.

In this project, you will address how a system composed of intrinsically stochastic epiblast cells can show robust and deterministic fate decisions, utilizing in vitro developing mouse gastruloids. You will apply wet-lab, state-of-the-art epigenetic and biochemical techniques, genome-perturbation strategies including CRISPR/Cas9, and a range of sequencing-based approaches, including single-cell omics.

9. PhD Programs in Chemical Biology and Chemistry

Summary of PhD Positions:

As a PhD Candidate, you will work on the development of new chemical methods to study drug resistance and RNA biology. Small molecule probes will be designed and synthesized that will help to interrogate the biochemical processes involved in drug resistance with a focus on the role of RNA. Applying the probes to live cells will assist to unravel the molecular mechanisms that cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics. The ultimate goal is to translate these findings to new strategies for combatting drug resistance. We are looking for candidates who are interested in the synthesis of molecular probes and their application.

11. PhD Programs in Land-based Carbon Offsets

Summary of PhD Positions:

Carbon offsetting is a tool used by e.g. governments, companies and individuals to compensate for their greenhouse gas emissions. It is widely considered to be needed for hard-to-abate emissions in the short and medium term. At the same time, there are also concerns about, inter alia, the permanence of carbon offset projects, carbon accounting over time, and reaching international agreement on validating carbon offset credits. As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to this debate by evaluating the effectiveness of land-based carbon offsetting for climate change mitigation and potential trade-offs with other environmental impacts, including biodiversity.

13. PhD Programs in Ritualisation of Euthanasia

Summary of PhD Positions:

For twenty years now, the Netherlands has had statutory rules and procedures regarding the termination of life on request. It is known that assisted dying has a considerable emotional and psychological impact and that rituals at the end of life can offer solace and have beneficial effects on resolving grief. So far, there has been no sustained research into the ritualisation of this contemporary form of dying.

Euthanasia, however, is an important social phenomenon that has the potential, as preliminary research indicates, to challenge the status quo of ritual studies, not least because of the ultimate control over circumstances and timing of death and thus its highly ‘programmed’ character.
