1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biomedical Optics

Summary of PhD Program:

For this project, we are looking for three PhD students who will work on optical system development, novel catheter designs, data processing algorithms, and modeling of scattering and polarization properties of tissue, with the goal of bringing these technologies to patient care. The research will be conducted at the VU University in Amsterdam. The candidate will be part of the PhD program of the Biophotonics & Medical Imaging section under the Physics and Astronomy Department at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. J.F. de Boer, an internationally recognised leader in the field of Biophotonics (www.deboer.one).

Application Deadline: 29-11-2024

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in gravitational waves on cryogenic sensing and vibration isolation

Summary of PhD Program:

You will investigate sensing, actuation and seismic isolation solutions including superconducting (inertial) sensing and actuation and active isolation of the cold finger. The cryogenic inertial sensing solutions will also find application in the Lunar Gravitational-wave Antenna (LGWA, http://lgwa.unicam.it/). At Nikhef, a cryogenic and vibrationally quiet sensor test bed is under development and in Maastricht, the ETpathfinder research facilities allow for testing your solutions in a cryogenic detector environment. Your research will entail (finite element) modeling and subsequent instrumentation work in the context of ET. In addition, you will also gain real detector experience by contributing to Virgo, possibly by helping design, prototype and install suspensions for new optics part of a detector upgrade.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cellular Neuroscience

Summary of PhD Program:

We have recently developed new endogenous protein labeling strategies and imaging techniques for studying how glutamate receptor organization influences synaptic transmission and plasticity, both in situ, in brain slice preparations, and in vivo. In this project, we will exploit these advanced molecular tools and imaging techniques to investigate how the molecular diversity and unique nanoscale organization characteristics of synapses arise, and how this in turn defines their functional properties.

4. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Attachment: In vivo, in silico, in theory

Summary of PhD Program:

In their first year of life, babies develop trust in their caregivers. This trust enables them to explore their environment and learn. However, caregivers exhibit different levels of sensitive responsiveness, leading to various types of attachment relationships. The exact mechanisms and timing of these differences remain unknown. To measure attachment development, research conducted in the everyday home environment is essential. In this project you will employ novel techniques for automated, long-term measurement of attachment and caregiver-child interaction embedded in the home, using video, audio, position tracking, and physiology (the ‘in vivo’ part of the project).

5. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in landscape response to retreating glaciers

Summary of PhD Program:

Mountain ranges are the primary source of global sediment and hotspots of geohazards. In their high-altitude, alpine regions, climate change is accelerating erosion and landslide activity due to rapid post-glacial landscape adjustment and permafrost degradation. While most current observations of these processes span just a few years or decades, there is an urgent need to understand how these dynamics unfold over much longer timescales (102-104 years) to quantify the impact of present, past and future glacial-interglacial climate changes. This NWO-funded project (Dutch Research Council) aims to tackle this research gap by examining the interactions among erosion, topography, and sediment fluxes over millennial timescales in the Western Southern Alps of New Zealand, and how they are influenced by tectonics.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in in-vitro toxicology

Summary of PhD Program:

Human based in vitro test systems are important tools for understanding the mechanistic basis of chemical induced toxicity and to aid in the development of safer chemicals including pharmaceuticals. In this project the candidate will be involved in optimising test methods for kidney and liver testing of chemicals of concern. The project is part of an EU consortium, CHIASMA, which aims to create an integrated framework to perform human and enviromental safety evaluation in a regulatory context.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cellular Neuroscience

Summary of PhD Program:

This project uses human iPSC-derived neurons and genetically encoded reporters to detect DCV trafficking and fusion. Using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, we have already generated mutations in a collection of candidate genes, also mutations associated with human brain disorders. In addition, we have obtained samples from human patients and generated human neuron models from these. This project will use life cell imaging to analyze DCV trafficking and secretion in these human models. We have previously established detection of DCV secretion in living neurons with single vesicle resolution and characterized several molecular factors that regulate secretion. In this project we will exploit these tools/methods to characterize the secretory pathway and dysregulation in disease.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cognitive Psychology/ Neuroscience

Summary of PhD Program:

As a member of our research team you will take the initiative in investigating how our visual attention is affected by interruptions. As part of a collective endeavour, you will explore novel ideas, conduct research which delivers solid new scientific knowledge, and report on the findings to your colleagues, at conferences, and in publications. In the end you compile your work in a PhD thesis. A project description is available on request from Prof Chris Olivers, c.n.l.olivers@vu.nl.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Analytical Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The enforcement of EU chemical safety legislation is crucial for advancing the European Green Deal agenda and the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability. Effective enforcement ensures EU citizens are protected from regulated substances and maintains fair competition among producers and importers. Advances in analytical techniques and chemical information systems offer new opportunities to identify chemicals of emerging concern. However, these novel methods are underutilized in regulatory contexts. This project aims to evaluate and develop rapid screening methods for identifying priority substances across various sample matrices. These methods will enhance enforcement actions, supporting national authorities in implementing key regulations like REACH, CLP, and product-specific legislation such as the RoHS Directive and regulations on food contact materials.
