3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Metabolic Control of Genome Integrity and DNA Replication in Early Development Mechanism and Cancer

Summary of PhD Program:

DNA replication is essential for a cell to multiply and transfer genetic information to its daughters. However, a plethora of extrinsic and intrinsic factors challenge individual DNA replication forks and cause replication stress, a hallmark of all cancer types and a range of developmental disorders. Yet, we know very little about the mechanisms that align DNA replication activities to potentially harmful endogenous threats such as metabolic stress, and thereby limiting the detrimental consequences of abnormal DNA replication.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neuromechanics and Motor Control of Voice

Summary of PhD Program:

The Vocal neuromechanics lab uses a combination of experimental and computational approaches to study motor control and physical mechanisms of sound production in the vocal vertebrates. We use and develop methods from biomechanics, electrophysiology, acoustics, and behaviour at different levels of organization (cellular, whole organ, in vivo). Examples of our work: Elemans et al (2024) Nature 627: 123–129; Adam et al (2023) Nature Communs. 14: 7787; Madsen et al (2023) Science 379: 928-933.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Political Science

Summary of PhD Program:

The Public Administration, Welfare and Politics research section is comprised of the two research fields public administration and welfare studies. The scholars focus on various research areas within public management and administration, comparative welfare studies and social policy as well as comparative politics and political economy. The section also provides high-quality, research-based teaching and supervision in the political science study program and the two professional master study programs in public management, and they disseminate research-based knowledge to key stakeholders.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Behavioural science insights for nature-based solutions

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD is embedded within a large Horizon project funded by the European Union (ΕU) which aims to develop and promote Nature-based Solutions (NbS). NbS are management solutions including and inspired by nature to address a variety of environmental and sustainability challenges, while enhancing biodiversity and other ecological functions. Climate adaptation and mitigation are important focus areas where NbS are expected to be essential instruments toward the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 as well as transforming society towards climate resilience.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Building Stock Characterisation and Circularity Aspects as Factors in Material Output Valuation

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project at University of Southern Denmark (research project 3c) is part of the response to the third objective, ‘Value of the building that is mobile’. This project will study how features of circularity contribute to the value of materials during the urban mining of buildings and the phase of material mobility between an old and new destination, using quantum concepts. The objective of 3c is to explore, develop, and test the environmental and social values of demountable materials on their many potential circular destinations, considering exchangeability, destination flexibility, and reconfigurability.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Multi-level Material Cycles and Market Dynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project at University of Southern Denmark (research project 3b) is part of the response to the third objective, ‘Value of the building that is mobile’. The valuation of building materials is crucial, and complex because of the volatility of building material markets. Parallel to project 3a, this project will further explore how the material cycles (e.g., production, manufacturing, use, and end-of-life management) and market dynamics (e.g., demand and supply of scrap in the building and non-building sectors) will affect the value of demounted building material. For example, fast-growing steel scrap from the transport sector will influence the supply and thus market economics of building steel recycling.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multi-layer Building Stocks Characterisation and Circular Economy Potential

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project at University of Southern Denmark (research project 3a) is part of the response to the Third objective, ‘Value of the building that is mobile’. The scale and quality of the existing building stock are the key determinants for stock upgrade and new construction. They indirectly determine the level of demolition and thus affect changes in building life expectancy. Understanding the quantity and quality of future construction and demolition waste and potentials of various CE strategies (including but not limited to material recycling and component reuse) requires high-resolution characterisation of the building stock.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Error Mitigation Strategies for Quantum Chemistry on Noisy Intermediate-scale Quantum Computers

Summary of PhD Program:

Traditional quantum chemical methods possess well-known limitations concerning both the accuracy and size of the molecular systems to be studied. Methods based on quantum computing are believed to be particularly well suited for simulating quantum systems like molecules and may enable a significant computational speed-up. However, given the existence of conventional numerical methods that have been refined over decades, it is still uncertain if quantum algorithms in practice indeed can provide a genuine quantum advantage over established techniques.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in the prevention of heart disease in middle-aged women via short intense physical activity integrated into daily activities

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD is embedded within a Danish Heart Foundation (Hjerteforeningen) funded grant, which is a 3-year long project due to start on 6 January 2025. The project aims to develop and test an intervention designed to prevent cardiovascular disease through Vigorous Intermittent Lifestyle Physical Activity (VILPA) in physically inactive Danish women aged 40-65. This is a result of a programme of work that Profs Thøgersen-Ntoumani and Stamatakis (co-investigator; University of Sydney) have conducted over the past approx. 5 years. VILPA addresses many of the barriers adults experience and is particularly suitable for adults who are not motivated or who are unable to do structured physical activity.
