Summary of PhD Program:
The candidate will join a highly-motivated and diverse group of researchers who study the genetics and genomics of crop domestication using tomato and related species as model system. The successful candidate will perform research on a project to investigate the function of gene regulatory sequences in the context of crop domestication. More specifically, the candidate will study variation in regulatory sequences that affected flower formation during tomato domestication and engineer novel regulatory sequences by genome editing. The candidate will conduct cutting-edge approaches in molecular biology, confocal microscopy, and genomics, including novel applications in precision genome editing and high-resolution RNA imaging. The project will include wet and dry lab experiments, and activities in growth chambers and greenhouses.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in comparative genomics or experimental biology of the gut microbiota
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD will join an SNSF Starting grant project and an international collaboration called GLOMUS. The project aims at understanding how the gut microbiota co-evolved with their mammalian hosts using computational and experimental approaches. The PhD can choose between two research axes, either
1/ Computational focus: the candidate will leverage large metagenomic datasets and use comparative genomics approaches to measure to what extent gut microbes and their mammalian host co-diversified for millions of years. The applicant will reconstruct and annotate metagenomes assembled genomes (MAGs) to build bacterial phylogenies and compare them to host phylogeny.
2/ Experimental focus: the candidate will isolate, whole-genome sequence and phenotypically characterize gut bacteria from wild micro-mammals. The PhD will then use comparative genomics approaches to test if certain bacterial phenotypes are associated with co-evolution with the mammalian host.
