1. Postdoctoral Position in Anchoring Innovation

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The research programme in classical studies ‘Anchoring Innovation in the Philosophical Schools of the Empire’ studies the way in which ‘the new’ is made acceptable and understandable to relevant social groups in a process of ‘anchoring’. The new is frequently anchored in ‘cultural common ground’. In this work package of the Anchoring Innovation research programme, we study how the notion of cultural common ground (as opposed to personal common ground) can help explain different aspects of the coming-into-being of the Roman empire. The overarching issue for this WP, then, is precisely the role of cultural common ground as an anchor for self-understanding and identity-formation.

Application Deadline: 24 April 2023

2. Postdoctoral Position in Lettercraft and Epistolary Performance in Early Medieval Europe

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The project studies how early medieval societies used the letter and who were among its users. It approaches the early medieval letter as a performative medium that had to be carried through space and was read out aloud, translated and circulated in public. It thus sees the medieval letter as a far more inclusive medium than is commonly assumed on the basis of textual qualities. Literacy or social status were not required to participate in what the project calls lettercraft, i.e. the various performative actions (e.g. travelling, delivering, listening, speaking, negotiating, gossiping) that along with writing and reading made up epistolary communication. The project explores the practical mechanics of such communication, as well as its social and political uses, e.g. as an instrument of conflict-resolution and community-building.

3. Postdoctoral Position in Dynamics of fronts and coexistence states

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Ecosystems are highly nonlinear systems characterized by a multiplicity of stable states, but seldom have the time to converge to these states. Their dynamics are rather affected by unpredictable natural drivers and human intervention to meet various functional needs. Multistability in variable environments is of deep concern because of the possible occurrence of state transitions involving abrupt declines in ecosystem function as tipping points are traversed, or gradual declines by front propagation.

4. Postdoctoral Position in Community assembly and spatial pattern formation

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

RESILIENCE aims to fundamentally advance our understanding and predictions of tipping points and critical transitions in ecosystems and reveal how these can be evaded and even reversed through spatial pattern formation. RESILIENCE will develop a new theory for emerging resilience through spatial pattern formation and link this with real tipping-prone biomes undergoing accelerating global change: savanna and tundra.

5. Postdoctoral Position in the positive effect of applying micro-organisms for the conservation of sedimentary stone

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Department of Earth Sciences is now looking for a highly-motivated applicant to fill a postdoctoral research position on examining the positive effects of microbial treatment on stone weathering at the pore and building scale. Physical, chemical and biological weathering has a profound impact on the Earth’s landscape and on its building infrastructure. Rock and masonry are constantly damaged and disaggregated by chemical reactions, water infiltration and temperature changes.

6. Postdoctoral Position in Public Engagement with Climate Change

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

In this postdoc project, you will lead an effort into developing such a framework and accompanying measuring instruments for the effectivity of Public Engagement and other forms of informal education projects that focus on climate change science. You will investigate one to two case projects of public engagement, with the goal to develop a framework for assessing the impact and efficacy of informal education with climate change science. You will test this framework by measuring changes in knowledge, attitude and behaviour in the target population. Special attention will be given to diversity within the community, and how the efficacy of informal education can be optimised across different societal groups.

7. Postdoctoral Position in development of virtual ocean learning experience

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

In this postdoc project, you will develop a ‘virtual ocean-going expedition/mission’ for the Marine Science curriculum at Utrecht University as well as individual courses in other (under)graduate programmes. You will develop a set of interactive python notebooks to elaborate (pre-)acquired oceanographic data and evaluate the viability (and identify challenges) of integrating the “virtual expedition” by assessing its pedagogical usability and student learning outcomes.

8. Postdoctoral Position in Recognition and Acknowledgement to Strengthen Equality

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

RAISE draws on the assumption that to reduce structural racism, people (and the institutions they operate in) have to be aware of these underlying boundary making processes that reproduce structural racism and the role it has in lasting inequalities. Recognition and acknowledgment of these forms of injustice will contribute to social action for equality. The project will be the first in Europe to study the awareness of boundary making processes in reproducing structural racism and what collective actions contribute to break through such boundary making processes to reduce structural racism.

9. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The project FIRMBACKBONE external link is initiated and carried out by Utrecht University (UU) and VU University (VU) Amsterdam. FIRMBACKBONE is funded by PDI-SSH. The goal of FIRMBACKBONE is to build an organically growing, longitudinal data infrastructure with information about Dutch companies for scientific research and education. The digitization of society and our economy has enabled new methods of collecting and analyzing data from companies.

10. Postdoctoral Position in Cloud-Aerosol interaction

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

For the CAINA (cloud-aerosol reactions in a nitrogen dominated atmosphere) project we are looking for a PhD/Postdoc candidate to join our endeavors. Reactive nitrogen is quickly becoming the dominant pollutant in many regions in the world, with important consequences for ecosystems, human health and climate. This leads to changes in atmospheric chemistry and physics that need to be understood. The CAINA project investigates how aerosols and clouds interact in this new chemical regime by combining field experiments, chamber studies and modeling. The project is located mainly in the Netherlands, where nitrogen pollution evolved to be a serious problem.

11. Postdoctoral Position in The Membrane Connection of Coenzyme A

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The maintenance of proper cellular levels of coenzyme A (CoA) through biosynthesis, uptake of precursors and degradation, is essential in all forms of life. Interference with CoA homeostasis leads to specific devastating CoA-linked diseases. Recent research in insect cell and yeast models has provided clues that CoA deficiency-induced changes in membrane lipid composition may facilitate uptake of CoA precursors ameliorating CoA deficiency.

12. Postdoctoral Position in Statistics – Detecting and Classifying Misspecification in Structural Equation Modeling using Machine Learning

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The research project lead by dr. David Goretzko aims at developing new methods for model fit evaluation in structural equation modeling using different tools from computational statistics, i.e., machine learning modeling and optimization. These methods should help applied researchers detecting misspecified (measurement) models while also assisting them with model re-specification. Besides, there will be various opportunities to collaborate with other researchers from within and outside the department.
